Top three alternatives to Ipod and why?

I'm thinking of shelling out $200~ for the mini. I'm wondering some quick pros and cons other alternatives out there. The general consensus seems to agree with Ipod being the best and others are being 'close but no cigar'. Why should I not buy an ipod?

i would get a dell. It's cheaper, lighter, and smaller. Plus, anyone has an ipod

I really don't care about style, more concerned with functionality, size, quality of decoding, price, etc....

the dell dj mini thing is smaller than the ipod? i don't think it's as slim. But I don't like it's navigation system. ipod's wheel is either a love or hate thing I've seen.. i personally love it.

the creative zen micro is rather interesting. I'm not too keen on it's looks, but the up down scroll allows you to touch and hold. shorter, but fatter than the mini. and a user replaceable battery.

Dell DJ & Zen are the only competitors?

iRiver H series

check out this and this for more info.

I originally had the zen xtra. I didnt like it, so I sold it and bought a iRiver H120. Couldnt be happier 🙂

1. Iaudio m3 Iaudio M3
Smaller and thinner than a Ipod but not smaller than a Ipod mini.
Voice record
FM tuner
usb 2.0
Acts as a hard-drive and no software needed to transfer music.
Can record FM tuner, and any secondary sources ( for example I can record a mix off my turntables at 128, 256, or 320k straight to mp3)
ogg, flac, wma, support

2. Iriver h320 I like this, but it is kind of big. Has a color display, you can put your pictures, short movie clips, ect.

3. Iaudio u2 or 4 Very compact.

Or wait for Iaudio M5, 5, or G3. Plus you'd be surprised at the number of other good mp3 player makers out there.

Ipod might be number one here in the states, but outside it might be a different story.

The iRiver players have by far the best array of features and format compatibility, however they're in the same price league as the iPod.

I have the M3, it's not near the $200 price range so it really shouldn't be competing with the ipod mini. It also features a remote so if you're not into that then it is not the mp3 player for you.

Second for the H120/140 or even the new 320/340. Personally if I were to get an iPod it would be the 3rd gen, regardless of the battery life. I just don't like the new click wheel, the touch wheel was better imo. I have an H120.

EDIT: and for a competitor for the iPod mini, go for the Zen Micro, but for reg iPod, I'd say iRiver H series or Zen Touch.

We have and use half a dozen MP3 boxes, each for different times and places.

Tiny Rio portable my wife likes when going light.
Large goofy portable for my son
CD player that does MP3 on CDR, and used by all.
Archos with 20 GB, getting updated now to 80 GB, this is our main plug in for car, and travels all the time with wife.
Mp3 CDR in other car.

Best bang for buck, MP3 CDR player.
Smallest, Rio
Wifes favorite, Archos
Sons favorite, his PC at home, MP3 CDR portable in car.
My favorite, car CDR Mp3 player.

I just ordered an iRiver h340 the other night off of Amazon for about $385. I almost got a Zen Xtra 40GB, and I was also considering an iPod, but then I found a review of the iRiver 3xx series and knew I had to have it. The features on the iRiver beat the snot out of the iPod. For one, you can record FM radio, which is big for me because there are so many times when I am listening to NPR and wish I could have recorded the conversation. Plus, I like that it can be used as a portable HDD without any additional software or configuration. The color screen is neat, but not super important since it's so small. However, hopefully they will be releasing US firmware sometime that allows the iRiver to play Xvid files (the asian firmware currently supports this), and then I would be REALLY happy.
