rosco: I totally disagree. Linux has a GUI already that works just fine. It does have a command prompt that many use on a daily basis (of course so does NT, 9x, and most anything else), but you are by no means required to use it, and can stay within the realm of GUI for as long as you wish. And Whistler is going to be just another rehash of windows.

Also, on a different note, there is somewhat of a standard for video cards and gui's. That's why they started calling the "video-accelerators" back around 93 or so. Cards started (and still do) shipping with hardware circuitry to assist in working with the mouse cursor and other commonly places in a GUI system.

Win2K:
1. Still lacking driver support.
2. Still lacking game support.
3. I think that's about it...

Linux:
1. Absurd boot times (it may just be with Mandrake/RedHat)
2/3. See Win2k 1/2
4. Lack of really good programs.
5. Incredible amount of crappy programs.

BeOS:
1/2. See Linux 4/5
3/4. See Win2k 1/2

Generally I like all of my OSes

MacOS

1. Those damn bombs.
2. Hides damn files on you,(one of the good things about windows is that you can see everything)
3. Can't switch between multiple IE windows easily(with windows i can have 20 open and switch with ease)
4. One godamn button?
5. Video cards suck for the Mac, yes even the new radeon's and geforce's, A G4 is supposed to be a super computer not a computer with low level video cards.
6. No more SCSI on the newer Macs
7. A beta that costs money(and yes i did buy it)
8. Appletalk is the slowest thing i have ever seen, I'm forced to use a 3rd party software because Apple likes to be proprietary.

Windows:
1. Everything it does is in RGB (not good at printing companies)
2. Have to tweak it so it runs fast(why not make the fastest settings the defaults?)
3. Desktop clutter.
4. The near future of Microsoft's .Net strategy *cough* monopoly *cough* controlling *cough*
5. Long as install times for the OS itself.
6. Having to know every nook and cranny just to disable stuff from starting up(Macintosh extensions manager anyone?)
7. DLL files, even whistlers attempt at controlling them is suck.
8. that damn registry
9. too many wizards. How about simpler ways to change things instead of being asked 20Q

BeOS:

1. Lack of drivers, but getting there
2. Lack of software, don't know if it'll get there
3. It's young(but damned stable)

Linux:

1. startx?
2. KDE, Gnome, windowmaker, (can we decide on a single gui here)
3. Good for servers bad for people who can't even plug in their mouse and keyboards without everything being color coded.

BeOS is mondo cool, too bad you cant do anyhting with it. Linux is OK, can do alot, if you know alot and dedicate your life to it. Windows, what else are you gonna use? And it is getting somewhat better. MacOS, the best gui out there. Macs are very very friendly, you can even configure them as a server with ease. Macs can do as much as a Windows machine. But they're damn expensive, and some components are sub par for what you could get with a pc, and all of the software is expensive too. MacOSX? beta's pretty good, not as user friendly, looks alot better since macexpo. but is it enough?

I say we all start our own OS AnandOS. The gui of MacOS9, the core of BeOS, throw in some stability of linux, make a monopoly, and have fun.

Mac annoyances:

- 31 character filenames
- The Chooser
- Non-dynamic memory allocation
- All Mac browsers are slower than their PC counterparts. A 33MHz 486 will blow away a 100MHz PowerPC Mac on the net.

PC annoyances:

- Having to restart after almost any trivial system change
- The registry
- Getting stuck at the "Windows 98 is now shutting down" screen
- Overzealous plug-n-play that detects my printer as a new device every time I turn on my PC

FOBSIDE: I think the "X" is seperated from the min/max buttons in win2k because it is too easy to hit the other buttons on accident especially at high resolutions. I barely notice it is seperated at 1280x1024. If my monitor was really good I'd be at 1600x1280 (or x1400 or whatever) and then it would be even better to have it slightly seperated.

In my opinion it was a good call, hehe...

I wish they would just come out with MacOS for x86. That way I could use OS X (which looks really nice), but wouldn't have to buy over-price over-rated Apple hardware.

Anyone here ever used an Amiga operating system?

Best the world has ever produced due to its simplicity, stability and speed using minimum resources on a common hardware setup.

Also the first true stable multitasking operating system - windows still can't get this right.

No bloatware on this baby - shame it died out with the dinosaurs...............

AmigaOS rocked!!

Too bad there aint enough software for BeOS coz it's a very nice OS.

To many soded wizards and other junk that wastes space and resources in general in the windows range. But what I really _HATE_ in w2k is when you click a file that you want to move via drag&drop. If windows can open it in the browser section of the window you will get a sharing violation if you dont drag it away fast enough and must reselect the file and move it before win gets a chanse to open it.

MacOS has worked oki doki on the rare occasion that I've used it.

Linux wont (to the amazement of all my Linux/Unix indepth friends) run properly on my machine.

What I really would like to see is a completely new H/W platform (no more legacy crap and well know bottlenecks) with a OS that has the speed of BeOS, the software from windows, the looks of MacOS and a twist of Unix stability.

Well, well one can allways dream :)

Another pet peave of mine: inability to resize *all* windows. For example, enter the control panel. No resize ability. File Open/Save dialog? No resize ability. Anything with the term "wizard" in it? No resize ability.

In looking at Intensebeta.com's latest screenshots of Whistler, it looks like nothing has changed! The same tiny fixed-sized windows are used. Unbelievable.

Linux:
-Completely backwards and messed up TCP/IP stack
-Very weak game support
-Printing? Hah.
-Device drivers? I think not.
-Linux junkies that like to say how great their OS is. Blah. There are so many broken and halfassed pieces to linux. Try BSD instead.

MacOS:
-Crashes more than any other operating system that I've used
-"Multitasking" is a joke and isn't really there
-One menu bar total instead of one menubar for each window
-Rebuilding desktop? wtf.
-Resource forks. Enough said.
-Very weak game support
-Extremely bad memory management
-Mac junkies that like to say how great their OS is. Blah. Those problems listed are far worse than any other OS that I've used.

Windows 2000
-Some older programs refuse to work.
-How many cryptically named files do we need in our winnt folder?
-800+ megs in my install? Bleh.
-Inability to remove some included components without a few hacks.
-Minimize/maximize/cose buttons are too close to each other
-Your drives are automatically setup as hidden shares when you install, so if you don't know about this and turn it off, its a big security hole.

Windows 98/95
-Extremely bad memory management
-Up until 98 SE with all bug fixes, crashed an assload
-Freezing up at "Windows 98 is shutting down"
-How many cryptically named files do we need in our windows folder?
-Inability to remove some included components without a few hacks.
-Minimize/maximize/cose buttons are too close to each other
-If I hit escape then delete all .pwl files, I can bypass the login "security"
-USB support is buggy

I'm sure there are more, but thats what I can think of offhand. All that said, Win2k's problems are the least crippling so I use that most of the time.

Linux- poor driver support.

MS/OSes - Registry problems, DLL & VxD, and worst of all crappy bloated GUI & messy Administrative Tools.

SCO Unix - Not enought driver or software supports.

NetWare - Excelent Administrative Tools, and well lay out, but not enought drivers support.
