I'm looking for some new rpgs...action rpgs to be specific (or whatever category Diablo 2 fits under--but any type will do). Let's see how many times ppl say WoW =D.

I've heard good things from Guild Wars and World of Warcraft. But GW has no monthly fee which is an upside, hence I'm getting it tomorrow :)

For non MMORPG's I'd suggest waiting for oblivion, but Morrowind GOTY edition is great too.

Hmmm well here goes:

Baldurs Gate is a awesome series, great story and fun games. Older graphics and turned based gameplay but a very cool game none the less.

Morrowind is a awesome open ended game that you can literally do pretty much whatever you want in it. Very cool story, very cool graphics, and alot of gamepaly (Still not beat it, got to reinstall).

Knights of the Old Republic was a awesome and very satisfying game as well. Great story and great use of the NWN engine.

I loved Fallout when it first came out but its an older engine. if your a big eye candy fan you will have a hard time staying with this one, but if you do its an amazing amazing game. If you do play it make sure you find Area 51 and the crashed space ship. A nice suprise awaits there that would make will smith proud :)

NWN was alot of fun and I did enjoy the story line although the end bugged me. Never played the sequels so cant say one way or the other on them.

Diablo II is still the best hack and slash game out there. The char skill system in that game for a hack and slash is about second to none. People are still finding new ways to create and play their chars plus free online play if you like that. Limited replability unless you enjoy finding loot and playing online.

I liked Dungeon Siege at first but the more I got into it the more I started to dislike it. Very simple story line, and I severely hated the simplistic char development scheme. Not to mention classes were pretty badly balanced, some paths were way way way more powerful than others.

Hope some of these suggestions help.

GOTHIC 2

I'm glad you brought this up, while agree there are several good rpgs out there such as diablo or fallout, there is this game few americans are aware of, but which is massive in europe. I myself was not aware of this. I saw this game called Gothic 2 sitting in the store shelf for several months, until finally one day I bought it. At first I was put off by the rather unique control scheme, and a bit more difficult combat than Morrowind, but then... WOW! After playing this game I can say morrowind has NOTHING on it. Gothic 2 has everything: fantastic comabat, sounds and music, gorgeous visuals, characters and npcs, and a good plot. One of the best features is the combat system, it is not simple point-and-click-and-forget-everything-else morrowind style combat. Combat success depends in large part on your "own" fighting skill instead of just stats. So even as a low character you can dare to take on much more powerdul enemies. Think of it as sort of playing Street Fighter in an rpg. But the thing about the Gothic games is there is an awesome vibe and feel to the game, with all the elements coming together. For instance the whole world breathes and is alive and real, unlike the worlds and characters in morrowind and kotor. Every line of dialogue is spoken.

If you visit gothic 1/2 related forums you will find that the gothic fans are almost religious fanatics, and almost every fan of gothic says it is the best rpg ever made. Even morrowind fans who have not played gothic comment on how huge fanatics the gothic fans seem to be.

Trust me, try gothic 2, chances are you'll love it. And have you looked at the screens of the upcoming gothic 3? It should be released sometime in spring 2006, and the screenshots are even more awesome than the oblivion screenshots.

UzairH is right to recommend Gothic 2; it's easily the most compelling and immersive RPG I've ever played. I tried Morrowind after Gothic 2, and Morrowind seemed really lame by comparison. I'm confused as to why Morrowind gets the glory while Americans ignore Gothic 2, but it's probably because the publisher didn't hype Gothic 2 much in the US.

You owe it to yourself to try Gothic 2! It's availabe for low prices, too: I've seen it for $9.99 in my local Babbage's, and it's around $15 at some online stores (gogamer.com, for example).

UzairH and Gorath, you made me want to try out Gothic 2.

Should I play the first one before that?

Fallout 2 rocks. I particularly enjoy the system requirements:

* Required: Windows (R)r 95/98 CD-ROM
* Pentium (TM) 90 or faster
* 16 MB RAM
* 30 MB available hard drive space
* Direct X certified SCGA card
* Direct X certified sound card
* 4X or faster CD-ROM drive
* Windows (R) 95/98/NT SP3 Only
* 100% Microsoft-compatible mouse

Recommended:
* Pentium (tm) 120 or faster
* 32 MB RAM
* 150 MB hard disk space
* DOES NOT WORK IN DOS

One of the few games I can install on my laptop and not suffer ANY drawbacks whatsoever, whether performance, quality, or anything. I still think the graphics are pretty good, especially considering the system requirements and the age of the game. If someone re-coded FO2 in 3D with the latest and greatest tech, improved the AI, Made ALL characters "talking heads" etc, I'd totally spend 50 bucks on it. Fallout 2 was hands down a great game. (I'm actually playing throught it right now! =) )

No, go for Gothic 2. If you love it (as I am sure you will), then go for Gothic 1. Gothic 1 is considerably more difficult than G2. And when you play G2, don't do so with the "Night of the Raven" expansion pack installed, it makes the game inhumanly difficult. I know, I tried :) The difficulty will likely put off a first timer.

The thing with Gothic series is that the German publisher was patehetic and failed to market it in the US. It is at least a 100 times better than Morrowind.
