RENO, Nev. — State Sen. Bill Raggio, one of Nevada’s most influential Republicans over the last four decades, said Thursday he’s endorsing U.S. Senate Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid’s re-election campaign.

Raggio sharply criticized Reid’s GOP opponent, Sharron Angle, saying he was willing to overlook how she lied and distorted his record during a bitter 2008 primary that he won but couldn’t ignore her legislative record.

"What is difficult to overlook is her record of being totally ineffective as a four-term assemblywoman, her inability or unwillingness to work with others even within her own party, and her extreme positions on issues such as Medicare, Social Security, education, veterans affairs and many others," the Reno lawmaker said in a statement.

Not mincing words either. Long term Tea Party is going to fracture GOP from within.

Probably. This has repeatedly played out and is clear evidence that at heart, the Republican Party establishment is much more close to the Democrat Party than to the values they profess during elections. If the Tea Party folks can't take over the Pubbies, then the GOP should die. We don't need two parties that hold the same beliefs and agenda, and the Dems are more honest about it.

Maybe then we'll get a new party that says economic freedom AND social freedom.

Well, that's the great thing about democracy - it ensure that you get not the leaders you need, but the leaders that you deserve. If we continue to borrow money and grow government, then regardless of what we call the party in power we will richly deserve the serfdom that will inevitably result.

How do you get from "borrow money and grow government" to "serfdom"?

Got to admire Mr. Raggio's courage, for whatever happens to the Tea Party and/or Ms. Angle, he has just signed his death warrant with the Republican Party. They are a union shop and you DO NOT stray from the party line ever-even when that party line is currently mad as a hatter.

Serfdom is what we have now and descending to depression due to inaction it would be even worse.

Simple. The more you empower any common entity, be it government or family or religion, the less power individuals have. You cannot grow government without empowering government. You cannot empower government without leaving less power for other entities, such as families, religion and individuals. Put differently, it is impossible to craft a government that meets more of your needs without it having more power over you. As Abraham Lincoln famously said:
The one is the common right of humanity, and the other the divine right of kings. It is the same principle in whatever shape it develops itself. It is the same spirit that says, 'You toil and work and earn bread, and I'll eat it.'

Or as Ford said:
A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have.

Power tends to concentrate anyway. The more power we give government to exercise for our benefit, the less able we are to exercise power for our own benefit. This is an absolute, whether that government is a representative republic or a hereditary king or a stern father or the Celestial Bureaucracy.

Hmmmm, old time Republican Guard versus New (R)age Tea Party. Now that's a fight that I'd like to see played out on Fox "News". I guess the first public shot across the bow with Rove playing whack-a-mole with Christine O'Donnels' qualifications got the line drawn with both sides taking their shirts off and putting on the 'ol war paint.

One can only hope that what emerges from this "cleansing" is a Party that is not wholly owned and operated by the far right, as it now exists and that Big Business takes a back seat for once....nah, ferget it....can't happen.

As far as the repubs are concerned, the very rich will always be their masters and the far right will always be the big stick they use to police their own.

What to do with the holier-than-thou Religious Right.......what to do....

Guess people just aren't onboard with Angle and her crazy positions like no abortions for rape victims, because if they were impregnated, well that is god's plan.

This is the thing that guarantees she doesn't get my vote. Contrary to what many religious folks believe, every woman who gets an abortion isn't a ho who gives it up to anybody. I live in rural Nevada and Reid is hated more than anything, and even thought I hate to think of him back in the senate, he really is the only logical choice in this state. The 3rd party canidates are barely a notch above Angle.

You don't have to like Reid, but as a practical matter, he's Senate majority leader. Even if he became minority leader, he would still be able to bring home the bacon much better than Angle who will be a junior Senator who is going to most likely be marginalized by the Republican establishment in the Senate. As tempting as it may be to make a political statement, Nevada is not in position to afford risking federal gravy train going by.

Heh. Repubs set out to energize and radicalize their base in the wake of the 2008 elections, and they've succeeded beyond their wildest expectations, invoking the law of unintended consequences. It's one thing to have obvious whackjobs like Angle, Brewer, Miller and O'Donnell voting for you, entirely another when your base is nuts enough to push them to the top as candidates. After this election is over, maybe they'll figure out that they might be overwhelmed by their own bullshit, moderate their own anti-gubmint rhetoric. Or not, because they need the money and the voices of the equally rabid rightwing donor base and the noise machine to survive...

Is it time for the Tea Party to became the Third national political party?

Expect to see Rush, Beck, and Fox News calling for sanity in politics soon.

Unfortunately, Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin & Company (Restoring Faith) are attempting to infect the Tea Party with the Theocratic tendencies of the Republican Party. Even if the Tea Party preempts the Republican establishment the result may be the same unholy alliance.

Both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party should die. Neither will, though.

This is true and ultimately why Reid will win. He's better situated to bring home the bacon.

It seems Bill Raggio has a case of sour grapes.

He knows Angle is a pathetic whackjob, an incompetent, and that the repub primary voters in Nevada really aren't much better having chosen to run her for the US Senate.

If you don't like the way the govt is run now, if you see it as incompetent, just imagine how bad it could get with a Senate full of people like her...
