Hello fine folks,

For my new computer, I purchased an Antec Solo case and an OCZ ModXStream Pro 500W PSU. While I am waiting for them to be delivered, I am starting to think I might have made a mistake.

Instead of a rear-mounted fan, this OCZ PSU has a top-mounted fan. However, the case does not have any vents on the top. Is this going to be a problem?

Thanks for reassuring me... or for telling me I need to shop for a new PSU!

Regards.

The fan needs to go at the bottom, facing inside the case. The fan will be pulling air from inside the case....that is the way the majority of PSUs will be set up.

the mistake you made was thinking about a psu's fan! you can turn the thing upside down, i was tempted to run my 750hx with fan on top in my antec1200 case but after lil research decided it would be fine on the spacer on bottom. (psu's components will cool better with air pointing up not sure how much it matters but im sure it will help)

Thank you for your reply.

I asked the question assuming the Antec Solo case was built just like the Antec NSK3480 case. The NSK has a "dual-chamber structure" that encloses the PSU. I guess this would make it impossible to use a PSU with a "top-mounted" fan? Oh, but I recall that one has a grille on the top...

I guess I will find out about the Solo case when I receive it next week!

1. Nice case, btw.

2. The power supply you've purchased does NOT have a "top mounted" fan. Rather, it has a fan that's able to be oriented to face either up or down, depending upon how you mount the power supply. Look at the picture of the ps at Newegg. Look closely at the mounting holes and side sticker. You'll notice that the side sticker is oriented to be readable if the fan faces downward. The mounting holes are oriented to have the fan face downward if mounted conventionally.

But, it really doesn't matter due to.....

3. The Antec Solo case's power supply mounting design. Look closely at the rear of the Antec Solo case at Newegg. See all the reliefs/cuts around the power supply mounting area? They're there to allow you to mount a power supply in any orientation you care to....so it is irrelevant how the ps is designed, the fan can be made to face downward. (And this is how many, many cases are made...so you can mount the power supply in any orientation you desire.)

So, you're stressing about absolutely nothing of consequence. Power supplies typically are designed to have their fans face downward, not up, on those that use large 120mm and larger fans. Front-to-back fan orientation is indifferent to this, as you can probably guess.
