Meh, I think a better comparison would be with the XLR-V instead of the CTS-V. The XLR-V looks waaaaaay better than the CTS-V.

xlr is old at this point, and clarkson already reviewed and hated on it (in the same set of reviews where he used a convertible mustang v6 on a dusty track and declared that a V8 mustang couldn't beat a horse).

I love the XLR. Gorgeous looking car and looks much better than the CTS, new or old. The retractable hardtop and sporty look is just awesomeness. 🙂

Comparisons are very important, but I'll admit that there have been some odd ones out there.

It pretty much makes no sense to compare a Ford Focus with a Nissan Titan, for example, as nobody in their right mind would ever cross-shop those vehicles.

But :

There are probably a lot of people would would cross-shop :

The M5, the CTS-V, and the CL63, with perhaps an RS6 in there for good measure.

The CTS-V, though it's the cheapest, is also the fastest. There are lots of factors though, and just because a magazine/review says one is 'best', doesn't mean that it's best for everyone. The content of the article should ideally reveal the particulars about the vehicles so that people can make informed decisions. Nothing at all wrong with that.

I agree that objectivity when comparing complementary goods is important. I just think that most of these comparisons are missing that element of objectivity. I've read too many oddball ones, to the point that I'm turned off by them.

I'm not saying it isn't a good idea, but I really don't think a ZR-1 is going to be cross-shopped against an M5, but I bet it gets talked about. I mean, one's a pure performance two seater, most of its costs spent on mechanical item. The other is a luxury sport sedan, they address two different segments -- until the comparison articles/shows start getting written.

Cars like the M5 and RS6 are no-compromise in pretty much any regard, whereas the cars listed in this comparison do all make some concessions to go fast. I guess I just don't see them as complementary and really wouldn't spend time comparing them.

Then again, I could be the oddball for not seeing it 🙂

i haven't seen that. any idea which episode it might be?

oh nice!!!!!!!!! i love their 3 car comparisons...seriously, its an AWESOME part of the show.

i just wish they would do a similar test like the m3, c63, and rs4, but instead do a midsize performance car comparison, like clarkson in an E63 AMG, hammond in a bmw m5, and may in an RS6 (mmm bi-turbo V10).

Heh, that'd be perfect, especially if it were the intro to the CTS-V making an appearance, driven by the Stig 😛

The blogger that posted the story was a complete idiot. The Bonneville Salt Flats arnt south of Reno, there about 350 east of Reno. I wonder if they maybe went thru my town for this past weekends Silver State Classic road race on their way to Bonneville. I knew I should have got the weekend off.
