Top Gear Drives Mustang GT500

What it boils down to: "We're afraid of it"

Really? From top gear? The same guys who tested older Lamborghinis?

The zl1 is a joke compared to this. Honestly i hope people don't buy this car and underestimate what it can really do, and wind up killing themselves or others in it. This car should be track use only imo.

The verdict
Extraordinary feat of engineering from Shelby. But - and it pains us to have to write this - not as much fun as Mustangs with half the power.

That does not compute. I guess people should forget about supercharging their 5.0's. It's just not as fun with a S/C installed. 😛

And no, I would not take a 302 over a '13 GT500. That's crazy talk.

The current Boss 302 is a beautiful car, but the '13 GT500 is something else entirely. It gets a different reaction from people.

Yeah i like my mustang, its a procharged mach 1 but it doesn't produce nearly the horsepower the 2013 gt500 dies . I know how, when, and where to use the power i make, unfortunately this isn't true for all mustang owners..

On your Hot Wheels T-Rex track set?

The reviews I've read say the ZL1 is the better sorted car, and faster on the track. As Top Gear says, the Mustang to have is the 302 LS.

I think it has to do with how the extra weight changes the track feel entirely. I can see the point. It's just a different tool for a different job. The 302 is a nice balanced track carver, not really a dragster. The GT500 is an absolute beast that happens to handle decently, but much more focused in go-straight 100+ rolls and 1/4s, standing miles, etc.

Good points. I guess for me, I just prefer the straight line power.

I felt the same way driving the Cobra we put a K Bell SC on last month. Car used to scare me. Now its just plain terrifying.

Lets see what the stig can do with it.

What the hell did Shelby have to do with this car? Not a damned thing.

Shelby wasn't an engineer, he was a marketing and publicity whore. At least as far as any recent cars with that name plastered on it are concerned.

Shelby is to cars as Lucas is to movie making: a has been.

Ford SVT built this car. Shelby didn't do shit except pose for pictures.

FTFY.

Same with Henry Ford. Name all over the car and he didn't have shit to do with it. Ford is to cars as Jobs is to phone making: ....

You do realize there is more to driving a car than HP?

I have this car. You need a pair of balls. This car is for men, not little triumph enthusiasts. It makes more sense in America. I suggest driving it again while listening to Jimi Hendrix and pretending you are in America.

lol Theres always one guy who'll play the USA card.

It is strange that Top Gear would take this position. It seems like they'd reviewed cars that were scarier, especially considering the $$$ if they wrecked it.

Anyone who has given favorable words to older lambos, and says "it's too scary" is obviously exhibiting some sort of bias.

Go back and look at their vette reviews. They bitch about how flexy the plastic is and ignore how well the car performs.

They have a strong anti-American bias.

This.

But it's 'OK' for a British car to literally fall-apart because it's 'British' and it actually makes it better? I enjoy the show, but take their opinions with a grain of salt.
