It deserved it. And it shows that VW is still doing well even considering the economic crisis. It recently overtook Ford to become the worlds third biggest car manufacturer. They've gotta be doing something right
 
Well, TBH, I have no idea, but it's entirely possible that Euro VWs are much better than US VWs. There are numerous examples of quality divergence depending on market and assembly location, parts sourcing, etc.

Looks a bit like a hot-rodded Mazda 3.
 
If the staff at Top Gear are in charge of determining what car is "Car of the Year" ... you can bet it isn't an American car.
