and the original top gear was also terrible its first few seasons according to most people.

TG USA got better towards the end of season 1. haven't watched anything past that though (i don't watch a whole lot of tv anymore)

The thing is though... Top Gear UK got better with each season, but I think Top Gear US actually got worse in season 2. The episodes just seemed to get hacked together. Although, the differences between season 1 and season 2 show that they may be trying new things, which isn't necessarily bad. As long as they realize what works and what doesn't!

When they brought in James May during season 2 (supposedly he didn't come in at first because he thought it wouldn't work), things practically just took off. Jason Dawes used cars segments were practical, but maybe not as interesting. He did have a Skyline GT-R R32 on one of them, which made me happy. :)

Top Gear USA is just unwatchable to me. I wish Carolla had been available to do the show, because I'd really like to see him in that long-form environment rather than the very tightly-edited Car Show.

I was recently in Manhattan and saw 3 exotic cars (if memory serves two of them were a Gallardo and a Bentley GT SS) parked in front of Trump Tower on 5th Avenue. I looked more closely (I was across the street) and saw Top Gear plates on the cars, so I started to head toward the cars to see what they were doing in case it was a TG UK segment. I then saw the TG USA guys standing around, and walked away.

You should have told them their show sucks.

I think the biggest difference is the guys on Top Gear UK were auto journalists before the TV show (at least Clarkson and May were). So they already knew how to give their opinions in an entertaining way. The Top Gear USA guys don't have that experience and just seem to be imitating what they've seen on other car shows.

Group think is what ruined TG USA. It's really not that bad, but someone on a forum decided it was and everybody else jumped on the bandwagon. It's like shopping at wal-mart, it's really not that bad, but everybody loves to bash the store, especially on line.
