Figuring the voice/data plan into the cost of the phone is ridiculous, The iPhone is no different than any other smart phone... If you upgraded to a blackberry or Treo you'd have to sign the same 2 year contract and pay for the same (actually more expensive) data plan.

That's the thing. Engadget did a price comparison with other smartphones, and the iPhone is very competitive.

Except that's not really true. I can buy an unlocked Treo or Blackberry and then do whatever contract I want. You can only buy an iPhone with a 2 year contract.

I agree that calling the price $3.5k is a bit absurd, but the lock-in aspect isn't to be ignored.

Well gee, I guess if I was making 100K a year, lived the corporate life fast lane, cellphone/blackbook lifestyle, I could see a need for this thing, and maybe I'd need it, but honestly these prices are nutts.

And I'm still on a phone that has no camera, no MP3 capability and no uber OS. Not sure I care for stuff like the iPhone.

Those people don't want the iPhone. They have Blackberries, and the iPhone is nowhere near being a replacement for that.

amen. i have my treo and it can do so much more than the iphone can.

iphone is more targeted towards regular/common consumers. treos/blackberrys/winmo phones are usually for corporate/business people.

It shouldn't be too long before unlocked iPhones are out and about. It is against the law to lock them to one service, however it isn't against the law for at&t to make it difficult for people to get it unlocked. Unfortunately, unlocked phones always carry a premium over locked ones, so T-mobile and other GSM users will have to pay more.
