<< 43. $189 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 1937 >>

now... $189 million in 1937, i wonder what that would be in today's dollars. I'm guessing if you would adjust that, snow white would be #1 on that list.

I've seen 66% of them. Many were before my time by quite a while, & I have no interest in seeing them.

I remember reading somewhere that gone with the wind would be the highest grossing if you adjust for inflation.

I must of overlooked gone with the wind, obviously it would gross higher, it even grossed higher at the time, i'd be willing to bet that Snow White would still be in the top 3.

In todays dollars Gone With The Wind would be #1.. Adjusting for inflation it would be about $2 billion dollars or somewhere around there.

This list isn't entirely accurate. Take a look at Star Wars. It's number 2 with $461, but it was released 20 years before Titanic. In 1977, $461 was far more money than $601 in 1997. They should have taken 3%/year inflation into account and posted the amount that money would be worth in 2001. Only then we could have an accurate list. So i guess this makes Star Wars the #1.

All those figures are useless if they aren't properly adjusted for inflation.

Oh yeah, and one more thing, guess which movie grossed the most money in opening weekend history? That's right, Fellowship of the Rings. :D

<< 2. Why isn't this list adjusted for inflation? ... It would be a better idea to adjust the movie grosses for inflation to reflect the true dollar value of the ticket sales. For example, ticket sales at present are $5 on average as compared to 50 cents in 1939 when Gone With the Wind (#30 on the list) was released. If one uses only the dollar sales as an indicator of a movie's ticket sales, the new movies would always come on top as against the movies released in the past. >>

Bottom of page says this and explains why...
