Real Alternative for teh win.

It does the exact same thing as Real Player, but without the spyware crap.

ok, stop posting 😛

most of us have discussed real alternative here. but realplayer as a standalone application should not be #9 on that list since it totally sucks. we all know real alternative is out there (like i said, it's been discussed many, many times on this forum) but he's referring to realPLAYER, not alternative.

Err...I was saying that he should use Real Alternative instead of Real Player...

further, the fact that nobody knows of the true benefits of winrar is sad 🙁 winrar > winzip... time for a poll.

ZipGenius owns all by a long shot.

I didn't even know that people still used ICQ. I used to use it back in 1998, but AIM pretty much became the defacto standard.

I dont use ICQ as much anymore, i dont even remember my UIN/pass or the email i used (i doubt i still have it) when i registered back in 98.

All i remember is that for computer gaming 80% of the people used ICQ. Those who used AIM probally also used ICQ.

Like I said, in it's time, ICQ was the greatest IM program. But then came the rest of the batch, slowly knocking ICQ down.
Only the true oldschoolers can truly appreciate ICQ.

Realplayer is up there because people are dumb.
For every nerd who has a clue (I.E. people like us), there are thousands more who put everything they can find on their computer.

Then they ask us to fix it when the thing runs too slow.

And just like that guys sig:
"There is a special place in hell reserved for Realplayer, right down the hall from Hitler."

Similarly, in its time, RealPlayer was awesome. It was the only way to stream audio (and later video) adequately on 56k before the other formats became available. It was also available on Linux. Then MS came out with a better format and Real started bloating their software with a heavy GUI and junk. But RealAudio had its place in history.

WinAmp's new stuff is junk too.

Christ! When did I get old enough to be able to talk about software "in my day..."

WOW. Such a fantastic and awesome article!

:-

I wonder who got paid to make a list like this. I want that job, it's gotta be the easiest in the world.

at one time or another on my adventures across the intarweb, I've used each of those programs. I don't know how ICQ got number 1 though, maybe it's more popular with people in other countries, but I haven't had a friend use it in years.

Meh, software design has gone downhill since we got all this horsepower to work with.

I have Firefox, winamp, Gaim, and 10 systray utilities running and my CPU is sitting at 10%, and my RAM is only at 38% use, yet all these programs are 2-5x as bloated at their 1999 equivalents, with only a handful of new features.

I'd still use it if I could. I hate garbage like MSN.. such a piece of crap.
ICQ was so nice and simple... I still have it installed and some of my friends still use it. I wish people hadn't moved on quite frankly. weird thing too.. I had ICQ back in '96, so it was definitely not released in 1997 😛

WinRAR does completely pwn Winzip. I haven't downloaded Wzip in years.

acrobat is a bloated peice of crap that wastes space and spreads crap files all over your system. i suggest people who feel the same try foxit, which is free and is 1 single file taking up 2.38mb of space. http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

it's just for reading though, not editing, which is fine by me.

Acrobat reader WAS bloated and took forever to load. They've re-tooled it though and now Adobe Reader 7 as it is called is light and fast.

Adobe Reader Version 7 is more bloated than ever. It's 27 megs! For a stupid little viewer! It is definitely not light, and it's not fast either. Compare this to 2.4 megs for the viewer he just mentioned.
