Toothache questions

Sorry to post this, but I'm in some pain here. My backmost tooth on the left side of my mouth cracked about 6 months ago. Now there is just a sharp corner of it left

Edit: Actual retouched photo: Link

Up is towards the rear of my mouth, down is torwards the front.

Sorry for the diagram.

Anyway, it didn't hurt when it broke. I brush my teeth usually 2x a day, but at least once a day, use mouthwash, etc. Yesterday it became tender. Today it started to hurt, and within the last 2 hours, the roof of my mouth around the tooth is hurting.

I think that the little nub thing at the top of the second diagram is what broke my tooth. I don't know, because it wasn't there before, but that's my guess.

The pain is just increasing. Maybe not unbearable, but I don't know if I can sleep tonight. My question is, does this sound like something *bad*. I know, I know, just go to the dentist. The thing is, I don't want to pay out the a--. It might be a while before I can get an appointment for a regular cost (as opposed to emergency 4x pricing). I'm strapped for cash, so I don't mind a bit of pain, as long as it's something that is safe.

I don't want to find out that I need surgery later, because I waited and the tooth got infected or something. I've used chloaseptic, aspirin, and now ice.

Any thoughts?

Edit: They said my tooth was very, very infected. They said if I had waited, I would have gotten a jawbone infection. Right now, I sound exactly like Homestar Runner. They said the roots of my tooth were much longer than normal, so I have lots and lots of stitches, which I have to get removed. I can't eat for a couple of days, and I'm on Vicadin and a anti-bacterial drug.

I get my tooth back in a week 😀 They said it was so infected that they need to let it sit in anti-bacterial liquid. I'm pretty messed up right now. Having never been on a drug stronger than ibuprofein, I can tell you that nitrous oxide was weird as hell.

I could see the nurse on one side, and the dentist on the other, but they were scrolling up and down, like the vsync on my eyes was messed up. I asked God for the Grand Unified Theory, and I also pondered the chemcial bonds of nitrous oxide.

Weird indeed. Too bad I can't do my sports report. Oh well.

Thanks everyone for your advice. 😛

Hmm, that doesn't sound good... Jawbone infection.

A note, when I push on the corner where my gums meet the opening of my mouth (does that make sense?), it's very tender. Also, biting down makes it very tender.

Since you say it cracked about 6 months ago and now it's starting to hurt, it's possible that it's now infected. Do you feel a lump along your gum anywhere? Even if you don't, the infection can be inside the gum.

You should call a dentist and see about a payment plan if you're strapped for cash. If the infection spreads to your jaw bone it won't be a dentist you'll be going to see.

Hmm, I think your're right. I'll call the dentist this morning.

😱

What do you mean I won't be going to see a dentist if it's my jawbone?

Then you'll need surgery.

A friend of mine had this done last month. He had a bad toothache and never did anything about it since the pain finally went away. It started bothering him again and when he went in it had spread to his jawbone. They ended up having to remove the part of the bone that was infected.

Oral Surgeon would be my guess = 'A world of sh|t'.

Kwzwaya!!

I'd better go then. I had hoped I could wait until I got into the military, but I guess not. I'm scared of dentists, because when I was like 10, they messed up and killed one of my teeth. They gave me 17 shots of novicane because the dental assistant was new (or something).

Ahhh

If I push up on the roof of my mouth just above my tooth, it hurts like a m-f.

Can I just hit myself with a hammer? It sucks being stuck at work.

Quit messing with it or it will get infected.

You say you're at work, do you have some sort of dental insurance to keep the cost down?

Well, I applied for it, it was a check-mark option on my health insurance. I've got my health insurance card, so I assume that I have dental insurance. I don't have a specific dental insurance card.

I'll see if we have a dentist as a client for our radio station. Maybe I can get a discount.

I think you should find out if you have coverage and if you have a deductible. If it's a decent plan you may only have a to pay a very small fee.

If its just a chipped/cracked tooth and not abcessed, the nerve is probably inflammed. Try a good anti-inflammatory like Aleve (anaprox/naprosyn).

I had a tooth like that and the entire right side of my face would ache something fierce from time to time. My jaw bone, especially, but it radiated through my face and neck. That was the nerve flaring up. Aspirin, tylenol, and ibuprofen wouldn't touch it, but I took two of those little blue Aleve tablets and it was totally gone in 40 minutes.

I haven't bought a bottle of Aleve in a while, but it was like $6.00 for the small bottle. If there are some dollar stores in your area, you can find an off-brand version of Aleve with the same active ingredient and strength for like $2.00.

a simple MS Paint job would have been at least one bazillion times better.

Well, I just found out that even though the insurance company offers it, my work won't let us have it.

Stupid work. This is going to be expensive.

Yeah, they don't play around.

FYI,

About 18 months ago my tooth cracked on get this, licorice. Within days it was the worst pain I have ever felt. I had to get a root canal, a 2 day painful ordeal.
The tooth cracked just recently again and I let it go. Bad decision as it got infected. Again very very painful. The next time a tooth cracks I am going to have it pulled right off the bat, none of this crap anymore. (providing it is in a place that I could not use it). So what I guess I am saying is, don't let it go.

Oh, no, I'm going as soon as they open up. Friend's at work said that they might charge $200 to remove it or so. That's not bad. I'd gladly pay it now 😉
