Tools - RWC1000

Recently purchased a Byte Brothers RWC1000 and both the instruction booklet and the device itself say to uncoil the target cable before trying to measure its length.

My question is - what effect does the coiling have on the results?

I ask because I came across 2 occasions recently where the measured length was absurd. One visual guess was about 60ft but showed 140, another guessed at 150ft, showed 450ft. Both these installed cables had "service loops" in them, but not hundreds of feet of extra cable.

When tested on a piece of cable laying out on the floor, the indicated measurement was within several feet of what the sequential marking on the cable indicated.

Any thoughts?
