Tool to fix NTFS filesystem? CHKDSK isn't doing the job....

The clone went well as far as I can tell, the OS works just fine. However, there still seem to be some broken parts of the filesystem that CHKDSK can't fix.

Any suggestions? GParted won't "grow" the partition to the full size of the new disk until the errors are fixed.

What does chkdsk say when you run it? I think there are some 3rd party pay tools but I've never looked at them because chkdsk always works fine.

chkdks seems to complete just fine. It's just that GParted still throws an error when checking the file system. Would a Windows repair maybe fix things?

Sound like the partition you saved with Windows on it had some kind of error so when you made a copy you kept the problem. I haven't used ghost in quite awhile but I am assuming you can mount the saved partition to access the files on it. If so take the problem hard drive and format it. Then copy all the files from the saved image directly to the newly partitioned and formated drive make sure hidden flies/system files if disabled so you can see all the files. Then once you have done use your Windows CD repair option on the new hard drive setup and run fixmbr and fixboot and that should make the drive bootable again.

not sure if i understood your situation, but since you mentioned Gparted, i'll give it a shot. i had a problem with it a few weeks ago when re-sizing my partitions.

the problem happened because i ran Gparted after a Windows crash. Gparted's error message stated that there were errors in the filesystem that needed to be fixed before i could perform any partition operations.

i rebooted the system, scheduled a CHKDSK, then rebooted again to let CHKDSK do its magic. the checking went on smoothly and the system rebooted automatically afterwards. however, this time, i didnt let Windows load -- i put the Gparted disc back into the drive and booted the LiveCD. the result was that Gparted gave me the very same error message about a filesystem problem. i rebooted once more, let Windows fully load, then restarted the system with the LiveCD. bingo!

so the rule is: after a CHKDSK, you must let the system load completely. and if the load is successful, shutdown the system properly, then load Gparted.

Did this by booting a Windows disk and running CHKDSK from the recovery console and then rebooting twice as you said. Still no luck, GParted still won't copy/stretch the image....

Going to try the tool linked above, maybe a Windows repair. If nothing else, I can always re-install Windows. Might be easier at this point to just do that and save the files I need off to a USB drive.

If you problem is the actual partition is corrupt you probably wont fix short of what I posted before or just do a format of the hard drive and reinstall Windows and programs ect. I run into this problem before and it fixed it for me. There maybe some program that fixes the partition but I tried Acronis Disk Director and Partition Magic and they said I had an error but they were unable to repair it.

Also If you don't fix the problem now its likely to totally make the problems worse later.
