Agreed. I liked them a lot when I was in high school, and then after I got over Aenima, I was over my Tool phase. I saw them live, and then I was definitely over it. It was _the_ most boring show I'd ever been to, and about half way through I just wanted it to end. I could have left early, of course, but I felt like it was going to get AWESOME at some point, so I stuck around.

Worst part was the next day at school, listening to everybody talk about how it was such a fucking, spiritual, enlightening experience. It was not. It made my back hurt from standing up straight for 2 hours without hardly moving.

Although, I think on my drive home from work tonight I will listen to Aenima.

You guys are sometimes too easily impressed by pointless bullshit. That song is really not impressive as something with passion. It's not written with heart like some of their old music was.

It's been awhile since I've listen to Rosetta Stoned, but I just went and checked it out and it's just repetitive...the same guitar rips over and over for 10 freaking minutes. What is odd is that I noticed that it's a dead rip off of another one of their songs!!! I've played guitar since the age of 12 and I can't help but pick up on these things.

Go to exactly 3:00 into this song

Now go 2:54 of this song

SAME FREAKING RIFF. Third Eye was a much better version of that song. This song doesn't deliver.

All of their songs are in the key of D. Adam Jones said in an interview they're all just based off of the pentatonic/blues scale. Now THATS boring. I think thats why a few of their songs sound the same. If they didn't use different time signatures and accent different beats, it would literally all sound the same.

Repetitive? Rosetta Stoned sounds like 8 songs mashed into one. And it's not all about technical ability, I don't think they've ever wanted to showcase technical guitar ability, but rather enhance the feel of the track. At 6:02 in Rosetta Stoned, it's a basic riff with some quick fingerwork, and alone it's nothing amazing, but it sets such a perfect mood for the song, it's more effective than any technical, contorting riff could be.

And, in my own opinion, while Adam is very talented, I have to say the highlight of the band's ability is Danny's drumming followed by Justin's bass.

First off, when is taking 8 songs and mashing them together a good thing? How the hell is that "good music". Secondly, it's been awhile since I've heard it, but I remember it as being the same riff changed up and just being reused over and over again during the whole song for the most part. But, as pointed out, Tool uses the blues scale for everything which may account for everything sounding so similar in the song. I'd have to go listen to the song again to know for sure.

Not even mentioning it's a direct rip-off of Third Eye - a MUCH better song.

I don't think I said anything about showcasing technical ability. No one said he needs to run through scales like he's a member of Dream Theater. The issue is that he lost his originality and the song is 8 minutes worth of boring. The use of the exact same riff only compounds the fact that Adam wasn't passionate about what he was writing.

That's my biggest problem with Tool fans. They thing 8 minutes worth of drawn out crap is brilliant music. OMG they used 24 different time signatures that uses numbers that match the number of days in the aztec calendar for the first week of June in 1904. OMG THEY ARE BRILLIANT!!!! They were great back when they had a passion for music and not trying to ruin it with throwing different things together to make some epic bullshit song that just plain sucks. Opiate, Undertow and Aenema were all great albums, but the band lost that edge and tried to be too smart for their own good.

I think the only time anyone really mentions time signatures and it matching to something that is not music, is in regards to the song Lateralus. And that's a very worthwhile statement - they use the fibronocci sequence in a song symbolizing the fibronocci sequence in lyrics. That song I enjoy greatly because I love the symbolism.
A lot of Tool's lyrics have always been "deep" if you want them to be, or they can appear very shallow. Depends on how you look at life. I happen to have always looked at it in a similar light as Tool's lyrics, so discovering Tool is something I am glad to have done. ;)

destrekor - I'm only mocking hardcore Tool fans. I know not all of their music has that, but it just seems like that is all the ever talk about. I do think their music has gone way downhill though.
