Why do fans of a band always call that band 'deep'? It's as if they're part of some exclusive club and if you don't 'get it' it's because you aren't as smart as them. :p

maynard was in a big-time christian family growing up, so many of his lyrics have to do with the REJECTION of organized religion.

that said, tool is a very spiritual band, but the spirituality is much more influence by eastern philiosophies and Carl Jung than anything else. And actually, followers of Jung (Maynard probably is, since he has mentioned Jung by name in concert) do believe in god, but it's not the exact same concept of god that you find in any christian religion that i know of.

THAT SAID: word on the street is maynard has in fact "found jesus."

THAT SAID THAT SAID:

from tool's website:

When approached for comment on his recent encounter with the Son of God, Maynard said, "That guy's a punk!"
As it turns out, Maynard was out "location scouting" near the Fourth Street bridge in downtown Los Angeles when he "found Jesus."
"Turns out he was here the whole time, and not that difficult to find if you know where to look," Maynard reported. Apparently Jesus offered him the position of campaign manager for his new line of "Holier Than Thou" sparkling holy water, which Maynard of course accepted. What wasn't obvious was that this guy is a total drunk. It's an occupational hazard. Every time our Lord goes to get a glass of water, it transforms into a generic grocery store Merlot. Because the alcoholic is the Son of God and an all-knowing being, he knew of Maynard?s extensive interest in collecting wine. So he went to work trying to get his lips on it. Maynard caught J.C. in his cellar transforming his precious wine collection into urine, then pissing it into the empty "sparkling holy water" bottles for the eventual sale to all those people who bought, read, and embraced "The Celestine Prophesy." Tragic.
"Truth be told," Maynard confessed, "I wasn't feeling top notch when I found him. The evening prior to the day in question I had over-indulged in a series of bad Molotov shrimp cocktails with a side of Makers Mark and twin strippers. So after an entire night of G.I. Blowouts, hot/cold sweats, and blurred vision, it's very possible that the guy I met wasn't even Jesus at all. For all I know, it was Willem Dafoe."

I've been listening to tool since undertow came out, and most of the time I have no idea what they're talking about.

It couldn't just be them naturally going through different phases as they age??? Most artists don't write about the same stuff for 10-15-20 years....they usually change.
And people always bitch about it, saying "that isn't what made them popular", etc.

I honestly don't pay attention to the lyrics when I listen to rock/metal.

I dont see how he's arrogant. Please expound.

I think he's thinking of Scott Stapp, King of Arrogant A**holes. Talk about an overrated, sanctimonious prick!

Maynard saying 'Fvck your god!' pretty much removes him from the same category as DCTalk. ;)

DCTalk is praise music. Maynard could very well be saying that to relate to those that need "to be saved" Kinda like making a CD that looks like devil music on the cover but on the inside its quite the opposite.

To the OP: Probably not.

To all the guys referencing Judith as "proof" for their argument: that song has nothing to do with God or Jesus.

And neither does Eulogy.

Maynard, (and Tool in general) has never been against spiritual beliefs of any kind in themselves, he's against people blindly following something without giving it a second thought.

Yes, lots of Tool fans think they're smarter than everyone else in the galaxy, as did I, but then I turned 17.

And they are not the best band ever to walk the planet. Aenima and Lateralus were great albums, Opiate and Undertow were merely okay, but MJK does have a unique and beautiful voice. There's no argument there. I used to take this band way too seriously, and while I still enjoy their music, it's no longer some weird obsession :p

And dude, Lifehouse rocks hard. ?

P.S. sorry for resurrecting this thread, I was searching for stuff and seem to have forgotten it's a month old :/

Well, if they die in an airplane crash, there will be no one to dispute your theory.
You could probably do a doctoral thesis on it at some religious school.
