I really just got into this band not to long ago. I'm surprised that some people don't get their music, the band is tight, the lyrics and vocals are also equally good. I've been listening to Aenima constantly for the last couple of weeks and its obvious that some of the songs/tracks have deeper meanings than most rock albums. So whats your take on the following tracks.

Stinkfish - maybe I just have a dirty mind but I think this song is about kinky sex or it could be about companionship but I think its sex

Eulogy - this seems like a straight-forward song, but I get the feeling that there's some underlying message to be found

H - I have'nt really looked the lyrics up on this song yet, the music is so facisnating that I have'nt really focused on the words

Useful Idiot - there may not be any special meaning behind this track, its not even music but Tool seems like the kind of band who has a purpose behind every track

Forty Six - whats your take on this song, I forget what the lyrics are

Message to Harry Manback - from what I read "Harry Manback" is a madeup name but the message is real. Apparently a friend of Maynards knew a guy who crashed one of Maynard's parties. I guess the party crasher was fairly obnoxious and ended up getting kicked out of the house, thus resulting in the message.

Hooker With a Penis - Great, great song. This song is complete ownage, whoever the kid is that this song is directed to got his ass handed to him

Jimmy - not sure what the meaning is in this song

Die Eier von Satan - Anyone know who the speaker is on this song, I'm guessing Hitler but I really have no clue. Also what does the phrase "Die Eier von Satan" mean anyway?

Aenima, Ions, Third Eye - whats your thoughts on these songs. In fact what does Aenima mean?

I hope you picked up the Opiate CD (it's really just a 6 song EP) a few studio cuts and a few live cuts. The recording is so clean that the live cuts sound almost like the studio. But it's a much more raw tool sound.

I also like the band. Much of my take on their music takes from the band as well, instead of just from the song itself - they're big on philosophy and introspection.

Stinkfist I see as the question of why people like doing things that are painful to them. Maynard is big on anti-tobacco-smoking, or so I hear - he's made it a point at at least one show to comment on smokers and how they're doing nothing but killing themselves. It's more the balance between instant gratification and long-term rewards, as I see it. Many people are at one extreme or another; Overweight people are a good example of people at one end of it, the ultra-religious at the other end. It seems to me to be their contention that life ends with our physical bodies, and so we must balance pleasure with control to enjoy contentedness in our lives. Or it could just be about fistf*cking

I think the intention of Eulogy is to imply that the idea of idolization & dogma is wrong. He's using JC as just an example. In other words, I'd agree with those who say there's more to it than you'd see at first glance.

forty-six and two is about the journey, the 'evolution' toward this set of realizations and beliefs. Supposedly the 46 refers to the number of human chromosomes.

Hooker with a Penis is pretty straightforward, and I'm not sure there's really a 'message' (ha-ha) in Message to Harry Manback, more of a 'here ya go, what do you think?' thing. Aenima is a venting of anger. Gonna hit reply now Maybe I'll edit in more interpretations.

Believe it or not I found and bought all of their albums and eps at a used record store for about 20 bucks. But out of all those albums I've really only listened to Aenima and Lateralus

I've always taken it as Tool's synopsis of dogmatically religious people *shrug*

I can't believe nobody's talked about Aenima.

Most Tool songs are allegorical, meaning there's a surface story but also an underlying metaphor to the entire thing. (Best example in media is The Name of The Rose)

Aenima on the surface is about JMK's dislike of L.A., and how he hates it so much he wishes a micro-apocalypse would come and sink it into the Pacific.

Below the surface I think it's about the false society created in L.A. and places like L.A., where people's priorities are drastically shifted from what's natural. ("Fret for your latte..." etc.) Also about how living life for things like money, fame, glamour, etc. is a surefire path to self-destruction or at least inner self-destruction. Not exactly a "go back to nature" message, just a "don't go so damn far away from nature" message.

Lots more could be said about the song. In a nutshell: get your priorities straight, L.A.
