Took the biggest step of my entire life today.

I finally took the biggest step in my entire life and decided to enlist in the USMC. My date for bootcamp is Feb. 7th (which is my older sister 21st bday). I already picked a job in Data Systems which looks like it will be awesome, the only semi-problem is that it requires a 5 year minumum enlistment because the schooling is so long. A good thing about it is that it requires i get a security clearance, hopefully by the time i decide to leave the Marines i will have top secret clearence and will be able to get a kick ass civilian job. I can always change my job up until the time i ship out but i doubt i will.

For some reason I dont feel phased by the U.S army. Top secret license? Why would any civilian job need that?

Some jobs require you to get it and it costs a company i think 50k to get it for one of its employees. Already having it can play a huge role in wether or not I get the job.

Also what do you mean by you dont feel phased by the US Army?

Lots of jobs require security clearances. Its easier when you've already been cleared.

how old are you? 12 first off, its the marines, second security clearances are used for sh!tloads of things besides military reasons...

EDIT: this was supposed to be of a quote from pholoppine mango, not narcing on you at all OP

Giving back to your country is one of the highest honors. I commend and respect your decision. I have a marine in reserves in one of my classes, and he is a great student. He received one of my top grades, as well as being married, with an infant. He's just shy of 20.

Best of luck to you. I am quite certain you will be successful.

My son just went into the Marines 2 weeks ago at Camp Pendleton. I am very proud of him. He graduates Feb 27th and then waits until Pensecola opens up. It got smacked by the hurricane. He plans to be a helicopter pilot/crew. I am excited for him and know he will do very well. He was so bored in school but is a very intelligent bright person. He was my thinker, processor.

Please stop posting about joining the Marines. There are 4 other threads where you mention this. If you are trying to impress people, please wait until you have actually become a Marine. Frankly, I wouldn't bring it up if you didn't remind me so much of Jayn and his ATI posts.

Anyone can go to the recruiter and sign up. It's actually setting foot at P.I. or San Diego and completing basic that will give you the right to mention the Corps and yourself in the same sentence and have it mean something.

BTW, one of your posts mentions that you were turned down due a medical reason. What type of medical condition did you have that you managed to clear up in ~ 2 months. (post was dated 9/30/04)

100% correct. A Top Secret security clearance with the United States Department of Defense (DoD) is required for many civilian postitions (both Civ Gov employee and Contractor positions) for many computer/IT related jobs. Anything having to do with weapons requires a TS or higher.

TS investigations cost anywhere from $35K-$60K depending on what/where they have to go to check you out and the lengths the Defense Security Service (DSS) LINK is told to go thru, based on the need for you to get that clearance.

Good luck in the USMC, BFC.
