Yesterday my car started shifting really hard from park to reverse and between 1st and 2nd. From park to reverse the car would take 10 seconds or to engage, but when it did there woukld be a loud BANG. From 1st to 2nd the car would "jump" while shifting. So I took in to the shop and they say they found that 2nd was slipping and that reverse and second gear are connected and that pressure needs to build when it shifts from park to reverse. Supposedly this is what is causes the BANG. So they tell me that what they think is wrong almost 100% positive is that two torque screws are loose and they need to be tightened, Run me about $250 on this if its whats wrong. If they open it up and its not I am still out the labor. I hate my Saturn

I expect any work on a Saturn to be expensive, especially a transmission. Its not right when you have to remove two bolts and a restraining bar just to get to the battery

Be glad its not the transmission that is going on you. That would run you much more than 250.

So far its not the problem, but I am expecting it to be.

Um, aren't you talking about parts INSIDE the transmission here? :confused: I mean, there's no parts outside the transmission that connect to reverse and/or second gear.

Yes, inside the transmission. So far its not the problem of replacing the whole transmission rather just tightening a few screws.

And yeah the cost involved is in remvoing the transmission & partially stripping it................ I'm assuming it needs to be removed anyway as I've never heard of a Saturn! (from the UK here) ,who makes it?

Btw I take it you are getting it fixed ASAP as you could destroy your transmission leaving it like that for any length of time!:Q

Cars = teh suck.

Seem pricey but they KNOW what they are doing. Also they have to pay for the overheads, taking apart the parts they need to. The labour and the knowledge of the guy that does it. Sure it would be easy if YOU could do it. Then he wouldn't have complained but its a price. If they screw it up by hiring an imcompetent mechanic then they would have to fix it for you.

If you tried to do it and did more damage then your SOL.

Totally agree!
Being a mechanic myself I should have some idea;)

Btw I wonder if the Saturn is based on any European GM ,a Vauxhall or Opel?

Oh yeah ,don't how it is in the US ,but over here new cars suck to work on ,more cramped than ever :| .I'll stick with my 11yr old Sierra;)
Read more cramped=takes longer= more labour= more £/$'s:disgust:

I completely agree with this, thats why I only do minor repair work to this vehicle and also because its my only car. I don't want to mess something up and be totally screwed. I took it to the dealer to have this problem diagnosed and fixed. I don't mind paying a little extra for something serious like the transmission on a car thats hard to work on and get a little longer warranty. Anyway they just called and the price is only $202.xx. I'm happy
