Oh well. He lived a lot longer than he would have had he not started cycling after the bypass surgery.

Sounds to me like a quadruple-bypass surgery might be bad for your health.

I submit to you that if this guy biked back across the country he'd have lived longer...it seems that when he stoped cycling he died. CYCLE 4 LIFE.

Eh, I know a guy who's like 63 who bikes like 30 miles every morning and has been biking for a long ass time...

He's healthier than a lot of people I know...

Pat Miller, a retired Anderson University health professor who also was among about 30 people on the cross-country ride, said Bebout was taking medication for his heart and for arthritis.

This isn't all that uncommon for centuries. People often bite off more than they can chew and then don't hydrate/eat properly on the ride.

I'd love to bike across the country one of these summers. Which way is best? Cali to East Coast? Or East Coast to Cali?
The only problem is I don't want to do it with one of those large organized groups... I want to set the pace. I good days, I'd prefer to just keep going... with a strong tail wind, why not pump out an extra 50 miles. With a strong head wind - and if I'm in an awesome location, why not spend the day sight seeing/recovering?

Anyway, I doubt it was the ride that killed him. Probably more of a coincidence that the press picked up on.

Yeah i did that once after a nice long mountain biking ride and 4.5 hours later, at the end of the ride, I puked, started to shake, couldn't drive my car, and I managed to get a glass of water in me, a shower, and then take a nap. After that I felt a lot better and went and had a nice big dinner.

That first line is misleading..

A man who pedaled 2,400 miles across the country after bypass surgery had given him a second chance at life died of a heart attack one day after completing the trip.

Makes it sound like he got out of the hospital and hopped on his bike....

i think you would want to go from west to east to have prevailing winds behind you.
