Pat Miller, a retired Anderson University health professor who also was among about 30 people on the cross-country ride, said Bebout was taking medication for his heart and for arthritis.
This isn't all that uncommon for centuries. People often bite off more than they can chew and then don't hydrate/eat properly on the ride.Originally posted by: HomeBrewerDude
I rode in the hotter than hell one year and a guy keeled over at the finish line...
Yeah i did that once after a nice long mountain biking ride and 4.5 hours later, at the end of the ride, I puked, started to shake, couldn't drive my car, and I managed to get a glass of water in me, a shower, and then take a nap. After that I felt a lot better and went and had a nice big dinner.Originally posted by: Fausto

I'd love to bike across the country one of these summers. Which way is best? Cali to East Coast? Or East Coast to Cali?
The only problem is I don't want to do it with one of those large organized groups... I want to set the pace. I good days, I'd prefer to just keep going... with a strong tail wind, why not pump out an extra 50 miles. With a strong head wind - and if I'm in an awesome location, why not spend the day sight seeing/recovering?
Anyway, I doubt it was the ride that killed him. Probably more of a coincidence that the press picked up on.
