im running a amd xp1800+ with a vantec fan. it says im idle at 70C and it runs around 75C when loading. i tried numerous fans and leaving my case open but it seems to be at the same temperature. can anyone help?

Is the heatsink itself hot to the touch? If it's a small one, it should be uncomfortably hot.

If a reasonably large heatsink, it should be very warm, but not hot.

IMO, the fact that you can run it at 75C means it's either a diode reading, and pretty hot, or the board is reading totally wrong. Given that the idle is 70C, I'd give my bet to the board just reading it wrong.

how long has it been since you mounted the heatsink (or remounted) and when is the last time you changed thermal paste, cause you might wanna do that too. if those two fail then think about getting a slightly biger heatsink, mabe with a 80mm fan or something

i just changed the thermal paste a couple of days ago and the temp is still the same.

That is way to hot!! wow are you using the cheap heat sink grease from radio shack or what? what software are you useing to find these temps.. use MBM 5 and see if it changes..

The XP1800+ Paliminos did run hot. With the stock HSF mine was running around 65C under load as read by my A7V333 bios/software.

I switched to a Thermaltake Silent Boost Plus AS5 and my load temps dropped under 50C. 75C is a bit hot (I think max is around 90C for that CPU but I would search around) but if it is stable and you don't have money for a better HSF then I wouldn't worry about it too much.
