Too Harsh? Judge Imposes Lifetime Driving Ban On 17-Year-Old Boy...

CRANSTON, R.I. (CBS Connecticut/AP) — A Rhode Island judge says he imposed a lifetime driving ban on a 17-year-old boy after a serious car accident because he wanted to send a message about reckless driving.
Judge William Guglietta revoked Lyle Topa’s license for the rest of his life on Tuesday in connection with the Oct. 23 crash in Charlestown. Topa and three other Chariho High School students were injured when their car crashed into a tree. One passenger was in a coma for weeks. Topa was driving with a suspended license at the time of the accident, according to The Westerly Sun.

Guglietta said Thursday that Rhode Island’s roads are “littered with broken dreams and broken futures” and it’s time for authorities to get serious about dangerous driving.
“It was the most strict, most drastic penalty this court can order,” Guglietta said, according to The Westerly Sun.
Topa’s lawyer says the penalty is too harsh and may be improper. But the teen can apply to the court to get his license back.

Stupid ass judge. I drove like the most immature fuck when I was 17. Now I'm the most senile desensitized model driver at 30.

I would say to harsh. When you have people with multiple DWI's and vehicular manslaughter that get there licenses back eventually taking his for life is a bit harsh. Especially when he is still an immature teenager. Take it for a long time and give him a chance to mature. Revoking it for life is not going to make him better but more likely to lead to a life of crime. Pretty much any decent job is going to require a drivers license. I would rather see something along the lines of a five year ban but with the option to reinstate when he graduates with at least a two year degree or fulfills an enlistment. Give him some motivation to do something with his life and mature.

To harsh, 5 yrs would be enough, we all did a lot of stupid shit at 17, banning driving for life will make it extremely difficult to find a steady job with limited means to get there..

Unless he moves to city with a decent public transportation system like NYC/Boston.

Here in Tampa though, that's almost as bad as the death penalty. Everything is 50 fucking miles away from everything else.

5-10 years would be sufficient, but from the way the article reads, I bet he will be driving anyway. Funny they revoked a license after a suspended license had no effect. I think this is a case that would call for some jail time.

I wouldn't worry too much about this guy. He will get a good lawyer and get the ruling overturned.

He was driving with a SUSPENDED license as it is. So I say good on the judge. The Guy cant follow directions and obey the law so why let him drive? Though rather than a lifetime ban I would say ban him till he is 25 or 30 and make him go in front of a judge and make his case to get it back. Still committing pety crimes...add more time to the ban. Become a model citizen as he matured then let him get it back.

But this wont stand...guy will appeal and win im sure

that judge needs to go. the boy will act differently at 30. why not impose a 5 yr ban or something

this. though, while you are, in theory, a good bit more mature 5 years later, would his driving skills ever have a chance to improve?

I find that people that start driving later in life, drive like utter shit and seem to be far more dangerous than teenagers just starting out. Of course, with practice, most anyone tends to get better.

I think he also needs some more instruction

So true. Just moved to Boston from PA. No one here uses turn signals.

Are you sure you didn't mean to say "the Bay Area?"
:hmm:

at first i thought it was way way to harsh. then i read the article.

topa and three other Chariho High School students were injured when their car crashed into a tree. One passenger was in a coma for weeks. Topa was driving with a suspended license at the time of the accident, according to The Westerly Sun.

So he had a suspended license already and ran into a tree. witich put one of his friends in a coma.

i don't have any sympathy for him for losing it for life.

How many potentially fatal accidents were you the trigger of?
Any accidents while illegally driving?

this

he's clearly a fucking moron with no respect for the law and well-being of others and that's not something that'll go away in 5 years time...

Some Jail time for driving under Suspension, and an extension of his Suspension for 5-10 years. Lifetime is just too much.

more i think about it i don't think it matters how long the damn suspension is. How many think he is really going to fallow that? he has already proven he will drive on suspended license.

it won't surprise me that he is back in court for the same charge in a year.
