the "glass" trannies come from people expecting the tranny to work after launching the car from 5k everytime. launch any awd car like that repeatedly (w/o it being built) and you'll for sure have something break.
bingo. I have a friend who works at a Subie dealership and he said that the cars that come in with broken trannies all have 4 things in common: (1) they're 02 models, (2) they're heavily modded, particularly power mods, (3) the owner is less than 25 years old, and (4) the failed gears (usually 1st and 2nd) are always shaved smooth.

VIC, how much did you sell your rex for ?? I have a rex and I might have to sell it soon because I am moving out of the country. Mine had 17K miles, perfect condition except for a few dind ( I will get it removed before I sell it).
A week ago, I can swear that the KBB value was 23.5K, but now is down to 21.5K. I still owed like 24k on the car and hoping to sell it for around 22-23k ( I bought the extended warranty though for $1500 extra). R u in oregon ?
How hard is it for you to sell your car ??

Thanx

Already been done by people many times. The new STi 6-speed is built on Subaru's latest case and gearset designs, is significantly stronger than the WRX 5-speed, and is a near-perfect bolt-in match (would be perfect but the rear diff gears have to be changed out, a relatively easy thing). The 6-speed also has much better gearing (the 6th gear is real, not some outrageously long overdrive gear like in the GTI, RSX, or GTS for example), and the front diff is LSD, so it is much more desireable overall.
I'll probably do that myself in the next 2-3 years. I plan on starting the mods on my WRX here within the next month or so. Soon as I get the time...

azev, I still have my WRX and plan on keeping it. I was referring to my old '98 Integra GSR.
If you're selling in Oregon, do NOT put your car in The Oregonian. Put it in autotrader.com

Whaaaa...? When you said it was a car that was desirable around here, I thought it had to be a Subaru Outback wagon! 😉
What's wrong with The Oregonian, BTW? Stuff doesn't sell in there?

Doesn't sell at all. I had old my car in the Oregonian for the full 6 weeks and only got 2 phone calls and not one person came out to look at the car. I was so pissed I took it off the market and my GF (happily) drove it around for a couple of months (it was long ago paid for so keeping it wasn't costing me anything but the $$$ I would get from selling it). Then I changed my mind, put it in autotrader.com and sold it in 2 weeks to the 2nd person who called.

btw, to those who may not get the joke, Portland is Subaru Outback city. It seems like every other car is a Subie sometimes 🙂

We just came back from checking it out. It looked very sweet when we drove up to the guy's house. It was a black wagon with tinted windows, and the headlights were modded (the chrome parts were painted flat black). There were also smoked side markers.

The first thing we noticed was that the body was wider than normal. The guy told us "it's probably the only one like this in NOrth America". It had the flared fenders.. FROM A SEDAN. We asked why it had them and he said that there was body damage and the panels were replaced. We asked what side it was hit from.. he said "all". We took a test drive anyways and it was pretty fast and smooth, but the back rattled a little.. more than a 2k2 car should. Hmm. Later it came out that he was the 2nd owner who bought it @ 300 miles and was going to fix it up (mod it). Hmmmmmmmm. So I guess he bought it salvaged and decided to mod it.

Yeah.... nO.

cool, i am glad he told you about all that stuff.. not all people are honest and will tell you about their car's history.

good work, now go ahead and get a  🙂

if you are really going to get a WRX, get a 2003. all model years before that have had somewhat weak/problematic trannies.

sorry to burst your bubble, read up on it. i-club.com i believe
This might be why, the tranny could be going out, or it did go out and the owner wanted to get rid of it. My friend had a WRX and after only 2k miles he was already saying his second gear "feels funny."

2003 and up, there was a band aid fix, I believe it prevents the clutch from catching completely right after release to prevent too much shock to the gearbox.

Of course if it's an auto tranny, none of this applies. Supposedly the automatic is substantially stronger than the stick for the WRX.

Also, I don't believe all collision damage is reported to carfax, don't depend on it completely.
Not entirely accurate. The 2002 model (the first year and only model before the 2003 🙂 ) had separate and unrelated tranny and clutch issues.
The clutch issue was a "cold shudder" where the clutch would shudder (or chatter as it is sometimes called) when cold. This was fixed via TSB with a heavier flywheel and improved clutch disc.
The tranny issue has not been addressed by SOA, but it is known that the 2003 model received improved synchos and gearset.
I can verify through personal experience that the "band aid fix" described is not accurate. Clutch dumps are very much possible in the 03 and 04.

As for i-club.com forums, let's just say that I don't put too much faith in stories from 16 year-olds who mod their first manual trans car to twice it original horsepower, then do repeated high rpm clutch dumps in that AWD car, and then get upset and blame the manufacturer when something expensive breaks.
rolleye.gif

It reminds me of the gen1 DSM rants about bad trannies, so what did Mitsu do? They strengthened the trannies for gen2. Then what happened? Crankwalk. It's AWD, people. The traction does not break easily and if you repeatedly dump the clutch at high rpms, something has to (and eventually will) give somewhere...

rilescat, location and model is everything. I recently sold a car that is desirable in my area for more than KBB private party to a buyer who had shopped and done his homework. Mine had clean title, original owner, and was in immaculate condition. It was worth the price and we both knew it.

Never heard of weak trannies in 1G dsms. Crankwalk in 2gs was caused by mis-manned crank bearings(off spec), they would wear out prematurely and gave the crank wiggle room, which would in turn kill the crank position sensor.

<- owned 2g AWD with act 2600 clutch
