Tony Snow stepping down

Sources: White House spokesman Snow to step down

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- White House press secretary Tony Snow will step down from his position as early as next month, sources inside and outside the Bush administration told CNN on Friday.

White House press secretary Tony Snow will step down from his position soon, sources said Friday.

When contacted by CNN about his possible departure, Snow said, "I'm not making any announcement."

Snow told conservative talk-show host Hugh Hewitt on Thursday that "financial reasons" may prevent him for serving the remainder of his boss's presidency.

"I'm not going to be able to go the distance, but that's primarily for financial reasons." Snow said. "I've told people when my money runs out, then I've got to go."

According to The Washington Post, Snow makes $168,000 as the White House spokesman.

CNN has previously reported that Chief of Staff Josh Bolten told senior White House staffers that unless they could commit to staying until President Bush leaves office in January 2009, they should leave by Labor Day.

Snow, 52, had been treated for colon cancer in 2005. In March, during surgery to remove a growth from his abdomen, doctors discovered that the cancer had returned and spread to his liver.

Five weeks later, Snow returned to the White House podium and continued to work as the president's chief spokesman as he underwent chemotherapy. In recent interviews, he indicated that his health situation had stabilized.

Before coming to the White House in April 2006, Snow had worked for the Fox News Channel and hosted his own nationally syndicated radio show.

He took a significant pay cut to take the job of press secretary and has talked publicly in the past about the financial sacrifices, as well as his passion for the post.

People close to Snow said that he felt he needed to make some more money to help his family, which includes children readying for college.

Speculation on who might replace Snow has centered on his deputy, Dana Perino. When asked about Snow's plans to leave, Perino told CNN, "I've got nothing on that, nor would I speculate."

Also on Friday, Rep. Dennis Hastert of Illinois announced that he would not seek another term in 2008. Hastert stepped down from his Republican leadership post but remained in Congress when Democrats took back control of Congress in November 2006.

Man...Bush's office is like a revolving door. However it's nice to see someone leaving for something other than scandal. I understand his reasons...having kids in school and college, and taking a significant pay cut. Dispite your opinion on how much he took as a cut, he did. Anyhow, Im sure this will be spun differently by the media though.

It's not like it matters who does it anyways, one professional liar is as good as another.

Hooray for Perino, "Lies and propaganda, now with 200% more hotness!"

WH Press Secretary should be a stop on "dirtiest jobs" on Discovery channel. I would so not want that job for any president. Talk about stress.

Ditto on the Perino cuteness factor. Too bad she has a mouthful of crap.

Bush's address to the nation, 1/10/07:
"A successful strategy for Iraq goes beyond military operations. Ordinary Iraqi citizens must see that military operations are accompanied by visible improvements in their neighborhoods and communities. So America will hold the Iraqi government to the benchmarks it has announced."

Pretty clear. These are our benchmarks, Bush stands by them, Iraq must meet them. But ruh oh, trouble! GAO report on Iraq states they failed almost all the benchmarks. Internal WH memo spin time. The memo argues that the GAO will not present a "true picture" of the situation in Iraq because the standards were "designed to lock in failure," according to portions of the document read to the AP by an official who has seen it.

"A bar was set so high, that it was almost not to be able to be met," White House deputy press secretary Dana Perino said."

Ah. so in January, the benchmarks were fine. Now that Iraq failed them, the benchmarks were setting the Iraq gov't up for failure.

First Rove, then Gonzales, now Snow?

I'm having the time of my life watching the Bush administration fall apart at the seams.

Snow must have received an advanced copy of our September 11th [lack of] progress report on Iraq, and he got tired of spinning the un-spinnable.

Well at least no one is issuing a subpoena for Snow and the position of Presidential Press secretary goes to someone who is good at political spin. So call the job description of Press secretary a professional liar if it makes you feel any better. And it just happens that such abilities are in high demand and Rupert Murdock pays better
and is less stressful.

Good luck Tony, I will not miss you. I always liked Scottie McClennan better, he at least managed to look uncomfortable when he lied.

And Tony Snow is a professional liar and can look anyone straight in the eye and lie with the best of them. Most people with that set of abilities become con men and when caught and jailed are diagnosed as psychopathic personalities. Its so nice to see Tony rise above it all to a higher calling.

Remind me to have such hatred and venom towards your administrations and anyone/everyone related including their pets, their friends, and their friend?s pets.

Depends on where you live. There are MANY places in the country where 168k is middle class. Im talking average homes, average cars, etc.

Snow haw been one of the most effective Presidential press secretaries in a long, long time. It's a remarkably tough job and very wearing-usually by the time they leave they are walking zombies. Tony Snow has been fiesty and very effective at spouting the party line (which is his sole job, after all) every day from beginning to end.

I wish the guy well, he did a good job. Hopefully he is leaving to cash in (unlike Rove's excuse-to spend more time with my family-and he leaves when his son is heading off to college) and not because of his cancer problem.

This story (and the Hastert one) have been out for a few days now.

why are you posting a 2 week old news story.

It was expected when the article was written he'd be leaving.

Who knows what he made a fox news. He could've been making double or triple what being press secretary pays.

If he didn't leave for financial reasons. He'll probably would've left for health reasons.

It doesn't really matter what his reason is, he can leave when he wants to. Who would blame him? He looks pretty rough so I'd guess it as much health reasons as anything, but then I'd just be guessing.

An income of 168,000 may be average in some places, but that doesn't make Tony Snow middle class. Also, are you saying that being middle class makes it difficult to survive?

He should just say he is leaving for health reasons...everyone would believe him.

He needs to concentrate on his health.

Deja Vu, seems we just discussed a coupe of weeks ago.

Yeah, he's looking rough. He has the hair of 90 yr old man.

I can understand, and believe him when he says he has to leave for financial reasons. I'm sure he was making waaay more as a broadcaster at Fox. I'd bet he has a big home expensive from his Fox days he's still paying for now. Maybe even two homes, if he didn't have a place in Washington DC before he sure does now.

May wanna save up some extra dough in his position. I wouldn't give him great odds for a long life expectancy or long career. He might wanna leave his family in a good financial position.

I thought he did a good job, and I wish him well.

Incorrect, most of his people have served far longer than people have in other admins. Tony Snow and all the rest were told to resign by Labor day if they didnt plan to stay until Bush leaves office.

The avg appointee serves about 18 months. A good deal of Bush's lasted 4-6 years.

Its obvious that it is for both financial and health reasons. Hes leaving so he can secure his families financial future incase he doesnt win his battle with cancer.

He was making bank at Fox. He likely has multiple million mortgages, plus three soon to be college aged kids who will likely be going to Ivy League schools.

We discussed it a couple weeks ago because he discussed the possibility a couple weeks ago after Rove stepped down. Bush's chief of staff told everyone that wasnt going to stick around the rest of Bush's term to resign by labor day. FYI his Chief of Staff is also expected to resign.

He's just moving from being spokesman from Bush at the White House back to his old job to being spokesman for Bush at Fox News.

I somewhat resent what you said Jaskalas and you are confused to boot. For the record I have never made a post where I dump on a family member and there is a very big difference between hate and lack of respect. Even in trying and partisan times, some people manage to conduct themselves as a person with personal integrity. Others make no effort integrity wise. While I would not wish cancer on anyone and can understand that Snow has the right to make his own career decisions, just don't ask me to respect Tony Snow.
