I'm seeing mixed opinions on this game; the physics are apparently a bit wonky (different from the original), and the lack of multiplayer is a bummer.

Oh well. Still looking forward to coming home from work so I can try it. :p

Hrmmm wonky physics? No multiplayer? Bummer indeed.

Fun games. One in the series that was surprisingly excellent was Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. Was made for PC also.

Played for two hours last night finally, got all the objectives on Warehouse and Hanger and I had a huge smile on my face the whole time lol.

I wouldn't call the physics wonky but they are a little different from what most people are accustomed to in THPS (I think), like you used to be able to land tricks while going headlong into a wall (well, from off a grind at least iirc) lol but it seems to crash you now; essentially I crash slightly more than I think I would, but it's pretty minor. Plus I'm rusty. Also I thought I remember having more control of your camera so that when you stop your board you can freely move the camera to look around, but you dont seem able to in this one.

Additionally I think the game's skating 'tech' is about on par with THPS3. You can manual and revert but there's no manual tricks, spine transfers or 'levelling out' tricks (like if you try to transfer between two ramps but miss the second ramp, you can't level your board to land on the ground).

Music has been great so far imo. There's some old tracks and some new ones. Goldfinger's "Superman" is a must have and is present. I recognized Public Enemy and Bad Religion as well, and there's something that sounds suspiciously like The Hives. I haven't looked around the menus all that extensively but I couldn't find a track listing unfortunately, maybe it's something you unlock later.

The only graphics option I was given was for resolution, but the game doesn't look too bad as is imo.

Game modes include the classics: "career", free skate, "single session" and so far there's an interesting new one called "big head survival" lol. Essentially you have a 0-100% counter that slowly ticks up at first and eventually goes faster and faster. Points you earn reduce the counter and you have to stay 'alive' for X amount of time. Kind of a neat idea, I'd guess there might be some more game modes to unlock as well.

Levels are faithful to the originals so far, but just looking at the list I'm hoping I unlock a few more or a few more get released. It looks like there's only like 7-8 right off the bat. Wiki indicates more have been added through DLC (?) but I don't know if any of it is even available on Steam [yet].

The game picked up my 360 controller instantly and needed no configuration or mapping.

I was sad to see my old favorite Bob Burnquist was not playable in this version lol.

All in all really happy I picked it up and if the extra content makes it's way to Steam and they keep adding levels and skaters, it'll be even better.

I used to love those games, and probably will pick it up on sale.

What I'd really like to see is the SKATE series that was on consoles... so much better skating game, and it had decent multiplayer also. A PC version with a non-Lego editor and mutiplayer browser would be my dream.

I've been playing this with my xbox360 controller for a couple of weeks now. I also got the $3 DLC that was being sold with it at the time.(I have no idea what it added, lol)

I've unlocked every map. I really enjoy the game, I really miss the park editor though. I wish they would have kept that in the game. You also can't make your own skater, only the option to play and upgrade an existing one. Not that big of a deal though.

I could never get the analog controls down on SKATE (PS3), I tried and tried and still sucked at it. I remember actually being disappointed in myself for not being coordinated in that game, especially when my nephew came over and destroyed me in it haha.

I've been playing this for a few weeks now. The "Revert DLC pack" as it's called, adds the ability to revert to manual so you can string together tricks on ramps. It also adds a few levels. Canada, LA, and Airport.

Overall the game feels a bit off from the original in terms of controls, and sometimes the animations are wonky as your skater floats towards a rail and clips out, but it's not a game breaker IMO. I even hooked up my old PS2 controller, awesome! Although I had to use Xpadder to map the buttons to the pre-definded keyboard keys since there is no way to change them within the game.. WTF?

I do wish they would add some of the options available later in the series, like spine transfers and whatnot, but again, it's not a deal breaker to enjoying the game really. It's still fun and plenty nostalgic if you played the THPS games back in the late 90's / early 2000's.

It's refreshing to see some positive reviews on this game. Seems like every time it goes on sale and people ask about it, everyone's like "DON'T PAY ANY MONEY FOR THIS GAME IT SUCKS AND IT'S TOTALLY DIFFERENT FROM THE ORIGINAL." I don't understand it. While there are some notable differences, they managed to make it mechanically identical to the PS1/N64 games.

To prove my point: When I plugged in my 360 controller and fired up the game for the first time, I was jumping, grinding, and pulling off combos almost immediately, with zero practice or tutorial help. I believe it's entirely because I've played the game so much on N64.

The control scheme is exactly the same. On N64 I played the game entirely with C-buttons, so Y on Xbox = C-up on N64, X on Xbox = C-down, B = C-right, and so-on and so-forth. PS1 controls are identical too. Y = Triangle, B= Circle, etc, etc. Exact same controls I used 12 years ago. I played this game so much.

The physics are a bit different here; it doesn't feel quite as "snappy". When I go to grind, rather than snapping on to the rail, my skater kinda "hovers" onto it. The wall-riding is also a bit harder to do. These are pretty minute differences though.

I also think it's a shame there's no animations for your skater getting back up. When you bail and need to get back up, the screen just fades to white and you're immediately back on your board. The originals didn't do this... they were fully animated instead. I remember mashing buttons to make my skater get up faster. Seems like developer laziness to me.

I noticed this too. Grinding a quarter-pipe and going straight into a wall usually doesn't end well for me, whereas in the originals it seemed like I could recover better.

And yeah... too bad about Bob Burnquest.

Dammit, I was going to buy it last time it was on sale and I didn't because people were saying this :\

Weird, I can revert but I never bought the DLC for the extra levels, maybe they included reverts in the base game and made the DLC maps only? Either way, still a ton of fun and I'd forgotten how maddening some of the other level's objectives can be lol. The new detailed in-game map is really nice though, gives you some guidance without completely giving everything away.

I'm curious about this, because from the first post it sounds like they took what the Tony Hawk series has become, striped down the controls and are now expecting you to pay to get back what the other games already have. This instantly soured the whole thought of getting it to me, and AFAIC they can go screw themselves... but if they added that in for free anyway and it's just a map pack it's slightly less disgusting.

Yeah, I guess revert was always there, but not revert to manual, which meant you couldn't string ramp tricks together in the first release. The team who designed the game commented early on that that ability wasn't available until THPS 3 I think, which is why they left it out. Makes sense to me, but fans weren't happy so they decided to add it in for free as an update. At the same time they released the update they also created a paid addon pack (called the revert DLC pack, haha) that gave you three new levels. I think that's where the confusion came in since they were both announced at the same time.
