Tony Gonzalez reportedly no longer a Chief...

I thought he had one year left on his contract, or maybe that was Larry Johnson

And as a Chiefs fan, I don't mind him being traded as long as its to a good team.

Age + Salary. I heard earlier today that the Falcons were trying to trade for him.

edit: Yep. ESPN has an 'insider' link about the trade rumor. Link

edit2: And here is an AJC post about it.

The Internet and sports talk radio were buzzing Monday about the possibility of the Falcons trading for All-Pro tight end Tony Gonzalez.

According to the National Football Post, the Falcons ?are seriously considering? sending a second-round pick (No. 55 overall) to the Chiefs for the 33-year-old tight end.

The AJC?s D. Orlando Ledbetter looked into the rumors and found nothing concrete, but says things could ?percolate? into something.

Gonzalez caught 96 passes for 1,058 yards and 10 touchdowns last season.

The Falcons? top tight end Justin Peelle caught 15 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns.

Would this be a good move for the Falcons?

In the pro bowl he looked damn good with P. Manning throwing him the ball...you'd think the colts would be in the running but any team would improve with him.

Falcons will tank

No.

They actually have a competent coach, front office, and QB now. They'll get a tougher schedule this year but they should still be in the running for a playoff slot barring a slew of major injuries.

TE is really the only hole they have on offense right now. Gonzalez would be a nice pickup.

I'm very impressed with the speed at which Atlanta has turned around their fortunes. After the 2007 season, they were pretty much battling the Dolphins and Raiders as the laughingstock of the NFL.

Mike Vick went away to federal PMITA prison, DeAngelo Hall was causing major distractions on a regular basis and then finally their coach quit on them in mid season.

But in basically one year, they have built a solid core, gone to the playoffs (almost winning) and continue to pick up solid players with good character. If I was an Atlanta fan, I'd be pretty happy about the direction they are headed.

why would the colts trade for him when they already have a pro bowl caliber tight end?

YES! - The Chiefs trades Gonzalez to the Falcons for a 2010 2nd round pick. Awesome pick-up for the Falcons.

I guess the Falcants think they are ready to make a SB run. Trade away a 2nd rounder for a guy that only has a few seasons left.

Are you kidding?

WTF is the point of having Matt Cassel without someone to throw to?

The Chiefs are stockpiling draft picks. They are basically in a rebuilding mode and a 33 year old TE isn't going to help them get younger.

I'm surprised though that the Falcons got him for only a 2nd round pick. The Falcons should be a favorite to win their division now and make it to the playoffs...especially if they shore up their defense...that 2nd round pick KC gets next year may end up being pretty low.

damn, TG was a class act all the way, even after we said he wanted to be traded last season, he still performed. He will be missed.

Yep. The fact that he had 90+ catches and 1000+ yards with the state of the KC offense last season (especially the QB position) shows that he is still one of the best, if not the best, TEs in the NFL still even at his age.
