Chirac's opposition to the war in Iraq was as much about establishing himself and France as the leader of the EU as it was about anything else. IMO

Dude like Aznar or Blair would have a chance. Although the UK turned in favor of military action AFTER the war started, the Spanish cheered when Aznar announced he wouldn't send any troops.

It will be a cold day in hell before any current leader of the European branch of the "coalitiion of the willing" will become president of Europe. Most Europeans opposed the war even if their govs. supported it. Aznar is not running for re-election so he doesn't care. The largest protests in the history of the UK were against this war, and the Italians are also staunchly against it and are super pissed at Berlusconi for supporting the US.

Yes. When I spend a few minutes of my precious time dissecting a post I believe to be based outside of our reality, and it is either ignored or sidestepped, I find the only way to get the attention of the party is to smack them upside the head.

Civilized? Hell no. Effective? You replied, didn't you?

If the European Union does create a president, what makes anyone think of any current national leader there as anything BUT a provincial governor? The whole idea of an EU President just smacks of dumbing down the national politics of all of the European Union member countries to the point that they have some sort of breakdown. Remember, the USA's strong central government was built upon a civil war. Could Europe survive a civil war to ever harden its union?
