He made the announcement in a speech to party activists in his Sedgefield constituency, after earlier briefing the Cabinet on his plans.

Mr Blair received a standing ovation from party members in the Trimdon Labour club as he arrived to make his long-awaited announcement.

He will remain prime minister until the Labour Party elects a new leader - expected to be Gordon Brown.

"I've come back here to Sedgefield - to my constituency - where my political journey began and where it's fitting that it should end.

"Today I announce my decision to stand down from the leadership of the Labour Party. The party will now select a new leader.

"On the 27th of June I will tender my resignation from the office of Prime Minister to the Queen," said Mr Blair.

im glad this bozo is going, but at the same time im even more horrified about the man replacing him.... gordon brown, especially after his budget turned out to be the biggest pack of lies and a excellen example in bait and switch.

ie reducing the middle income tax bracket from 22p to 20p in the pound, but at the same time removing completey the old 10p bracket....so all those in that bracket now pay 2 times as much

tony's been full of bare faced lies since day one too.

spending millions on the NHS he says....yet the NHS continues to cut back dentist surgery's and continues lay off junior nurses/doctors and reduce space for applicants because money is tight.

since tony blair came to power there are now enough civil servants to populate sheffield....up from only enough to fill a village.

i know where the moneys going..... copious amounts of frivolous admin work. the congestion charge is a great example, nearly all the money from the congestion charge actually goes into paying the people to run the damn thing.

britain is a more prosperous place?..... i dont think so, immigrants are taking all the jobs, and all thats happening is this....

the poor get the benefits and tax relief

the rich are either too rich to notice taxes etc or they able to be in a position to aquire off shore banks so they pay less tax

the middle classes get squeezed to make up for the money lost to the poor and the money the rich arent paying back.

less than 1% of the UK population earns 25% of all the money.....25%, im pretty sure TB and GB walk out of downing street in the morning, see all the brokers driving their porsches and think "hell yeah, were doing a good job ere lads!" forgetting completely that on the otherside of the M25 ring road...theres actually a whole country.

thing is though....there isnt a single party or politician i actually like or agree with. so im stuck.

I?m sort of jealous that we got Bush and the UK got Blair. I was impressed by his skills as a speaker.

In the UK, the PM has to be a decent speaker. Unlike in the US, the PM of Britain has to be able to debate and speak in front of Parliament, whereas here we have Bush who is quite well protected by his administration and answers to nobody.

I still think we should conduct congress the same way they conduct their house of parliament or whatever they call it...

Completely agree with you there.

The worst thing about this government has been the lies and spin. When something hasn't worked out, instead of the government admitting it, they just carry on and try to tell us that everythings improving.

Education, education, education? - Just lower the standards and the grade boundaries to create an illusion of students becoming cleverer.

24 hours to save the NHS? - Thanks to every increasing administration and bureaucrosy it's now becoming a bottomless pit with no noticable improvements.

Tough on crime? - Failed. I don't feel safe at all sometimes when walking at night. Instead they've decided to deliberately create criminals out of motorists with speed cameras and speed limit cuts (and road deaths have STOPPED falling).

I could go on but I just can't stop thinking of tax, banning, spin and a general nanny state.

The only good things I can think of are the minimum wage (although wasn't that a Tory proposal back then as well?), and his involvement in SOME foreign policy like Northern Ireland, Kosovo (NOT Iraq/Afganistan).

Why are you jealous when Bush speaks in the same terms as you, existentialism?

I think some of the Founding Fathers would disagree with you.

No matter if you are a polished public speaker or come across as an illiterate bozo----you still can't get away with polishing a turd. The Iraq war was partly Blair's brainfart. And now Blair must pay the price for advocating stupidity.---his party is extremely lucky that Blair didn't take the lot of them down and as a result handing UK control to the other party.

Meanwhile, back in the good ole USA, GWB&co. is in the same dilemma---GWB&co. has already severely wounded the GOP with the results of the 11/06 election. And now GWB seems bent on totally destroying the GOP in 08.----maybe we should see if we can impeach GWB&co. on 6/27/07----now that would be sweet.---as the collective average IQ of world leaders would soar
in one single day.---48 more days and counting.

I hope that the next leader isn't pro-Genocide. With so many in the UK supporting the Nazi-like BNP, I'm worried.

At least he has enough class to step down for not being a good leader and enough intelligence to do it before he is booted.
