I used to get them years ago when I smoked- once I stopped I've only gotten maybe 1-2 over the last 12 years or so. But yeah- they're gross.

Yeah these things are nasty. I get them on occasion; they stick in the spot where I assume my tonsils used to reside. Blech.

I don't think I've ever had them. I'd be interested in seeing a poll(but not interested enough to make one :^P) on how common they are.

Wonder if it's a pollution or geographical thing. My tonsils have never been anywhere near as swollen as the tonsils in pics of this condition and those people seriously look diseased.

I've never lived in heavily polluted areas though.

I grew up with smokers, smoked myself, and worked in construction, and back country jobs. That's a small sample size, but it doesn't seem like pollution's the answer.

I was too much of a cheap ass to buy a waterpik thingy. It was starting to drive me mad this morning, though. I tried gargling a bunch of times, using a water syringe (though not like these kind which would probably work), then I went through about 8 Q-tips and 15-20 gag reflex near-barfs trying to get that fucker out of there. I got a good chunk of it but I think there's still a little speck of it superglued in there. Arrrgh, my throat is still all tense and aggravated. Might get a cheap waterpik on amazon along with a Tongue cleaner

edit: ha, look at the this product: His-and-Her-Tongue-Scrapers

also I bet wearing a mouth guard when I sleep every night (mega sleeping teeth grinder) contributes.

The tonsils are part of your immune system, perhaps it's a symptom of a weak or under developed immune system.

I get them periodically, little ones, alittle smaller than a pencil tip.

They're just trapped food particles. I only get them if I eat a lot of pasta and even then very rarely. I've used a wooden tongue depressor to get them out with great success.

When I was about 15yo a much younger friend (~10yo) used to get them all the time. Back then I had no idea what they were and was completely floored when he first brought them to my attention in the worst way imaginable:
He would secretly get one out and use it to perform the most evil/diabolical version of The Dirty Sanchez on unsuspecting visitors and one day it was my turn. I wish I were kidding.

Smashed tonsil stone and spit pushed right under my nose unexpectedly. D:

A couple years later after he got me a few times I started getting them so I figured they were contagious... until I read up on it about 14 years ago.

I think I would have seriously beat him half to death for that.

Had these for on and off for ages. I finally found out what they were via an article on Cracked.

Best way I found to deal with the larger buggers is to take two q-tips, break one off at the head, lash the two together (for length) with floss and gently prod it out with the broken off end.

Like others, had em occasionally when I was a teenager. Haven't noticed any in years. (although now I'm sure they'll have a resurgence)

They're the sign of an amazingly badass immune system. Tonsilliths are the mass graves of the body's slaughtered enemies, pushed out into a main entryway for all newcomers to see.
