The problem is most people don't have grinders that can make the fine grind necessary for espresso, a normal coffee grinder just won't do it. Hints for n00bs, the proper grind should have an extraction time of about 25 seconds; steamed milk should be between 140 and 160F, after about 80F the milk can't hold much more air, so you should tilt the cup to form a spinning action in the cup --so it to heats up evenly. If you are using a mechanical thermometer check its reaction time, you may want to stop heating at 120F so the milk doesn't overheat.
