Does Jonathan and Lionel have the same type of relationship that Clark and Lex have?

Lionel says to Martha, "Jonathan and I allowed politics to get between us", as if they had been friends when they were younger?

I'm assuming that to be a NO response. If you think back to earlier episodes in the series, Johnathan and Martha first met Lionel (and a young Lex, ~8 or 9 years old, if I remember right) on the day of the meteor shower. They had the accident when the ship came down almost on top of their truck, and while hanging upside down in the truck, they saw who was soon to be their adopted son, Clark, walk up to them. Later on, they were driving down the highway, with Clark's ship in the back of the truck (tarped over to keep prying eyes away), heading back to the farm, when they almost ran over Lionel.
Lionel asked them for help, since Lex was lying in a nearby field, missing most of his hair, and he didn't know what to do. Johnathan and Martha (and soon to be Clark) gave Lionel and Lex a ride to the hospital, where Lex was treated, and Lionel offered to help the Kents in any way possible. Later on, they took Lionel up on the offer, and he arranged for an adoption agency to be formed so Clark could be adopted by the Kents, then the adoption agency went away.

However, Lionel is scheming and manipulative, and a few years of knowing him might be worth a lifetime, no? 😀
