Tonights shuttle launch to be viewable from nearly the entire east coast...

MAP of Area of visibility

Liftoff is scheduled for 920pm tonight and the shuttle will be visible for up to 8 minutes.

By location

Southeast U.S. coastline: Anywhere north of Cape Canaveral, I suggest viewers initially concentrate on the south-southwest horizon. If you are south of the Cape, look low toward the north-northeast. If you're west of the Cape, look low toward the east-northeast.
Mid-Atlantic region: Look toward the south about 3 to 6 minutes after launch.
Northeast: Concentrate your gaze low toward the south-southeast about 6 to 8 minutes after launch.
For most viewers, the shuttle will appear to literally skim the horizon, so be sure there are no buildings or trees to obstruct your view.

This is an awesome sight from Fort Lauderdale - 200 miles away. For a good minute or more this giant tongue of flame is visible in the sky.

There's quite a bit of cloud cover in MA at the moment, doesn't seem like I'd be able to see it. Plus it's during Lost. 🙁

Lost isn't new tonight...

I live about 50 miles south of Cape Canaveral. I'll go outside and look if I remember.

I live 45 miles to the west of the launch site and after about 50 launches or so this gets boring, even a night launch. Whenit was new it was so exciting though, the flash from the boosters is so bright it lights up the sky for 50 or more miles in all directions. For a minute or so it is like daytime at night.

Crap I completely forgot. Well at least I know early in the day, rather than finding out at like 8pm that my night will be much sadder and less confusing.
Will use that time I guess to catch up on other tv shows, or play some Killzone 2. 🙂

And to get this back on rails -
too bad I'm in Ohio... won't be able to see a thing. 🙁
Wish I could. Never seen a shuttle launch other than on TV, and it would be amazing to witness in person. I love space and seeing us accomplish something of that magnitude would be just breathtaking.

I lived about 50 miles as the crow flies from Canaveral from the late 60's until about 10 years ago. Dud is right, they do get boring. But you should have seen those Apollo launches! They made the shuttles look like a model rocket in your back yard. The night Apollo launches looked like the frigging sun was rising! It literally would cast a shadow from 50 miles away!

Tangent:

People from Florida who are saying the shuttle launches are boring -> Shut the hell up.

You sound like those douchebags from northern states who move to maryland and say dumb shit like "Cold? This ain't cold!" when it's 15 degrees outside. It's cold to us, you jackass, so shut your trap and go back to freakin' North Dakota and freeze your nipples off.

Thank you, and we now return to your regularly scheduled program.

get Lost streaming on the website...but yeah there's cloud cover.

Well, crap....looks like Atlanta is on the extreme edge of the visible area for the booster rockets. Maybe is we bust out the telescope we can see it.

Gas leak postpones space shuttle Discovery launch

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. ? NASA has postponed the launch of space shuttle Discovery because of a gas leak. The leak of gaseous hydrogen occurred as the launch team was filling the external fuel tank for liftoff Wednesday night. The seven astronauts had yet to board the spaceship.

Discovery's flight to the international space station is already a month late because of concern about hydrogen gas valves in the engine compartment.

NASA officials say the leak occurred in plumbing outside of the shuttle and had nothing to do with those valves.

Shuttle officials are now shooting for a launch on Thursday night.
