Tonight's Caprica Episode [01-29-2010] - [Episode #0102. "Rebirth."]...

looking forward to it.

after only having seen the pilot for so long, I'm really curious as to what Caprica is going to look like as a tv series.

Is this series any good so far?
I really dug it.

it's not BSG and if you're looking for pewpewlasergun action/adventure sci-fi, this isn't the show for you, but it's sci-fi noir and kinda feels Twin Peaks-y to me in terms of tone. I feel like the story is pretty compelling so far.

This show is definitely picking up pace, and fast.

Like loki said, it's not BSG. But it doesn't need to be. It's before BSG, so it can't be BSG.
...
😛

I was hesitant after the pilot, of which I watched before watching this show tonight, albeit timeshifted anyhow, as I had recorded the pilot last week after having never gotten around to renting the dvd. But even the pilot started to tell me "you are going to stick around for this season", it quickly had some interest-piquing moments.
And tonight's episode even more so. It's not crazy action, but I can still say the pace is definitely quickening.

BSG was more about the drama between people and everything. It never really got seriously into the morality debate of these "abominations". Funny as I actually argued that in an entirely unrelated thread. Jeff, you around? 😀

This show, however, is going head first into the whole morality concept of the essence of what it means to be human being placed into machines.

Gives a good argument as to why the Cylon human models forced the robot tank models into being slaves and likely keeping them from having full personality. That kind of machine with a full human mind would be dangerous.
Good thing this model is still a kid, albeit a spunky, angsty kid. A kid who oddly enough, is played by a girl who is 22, and also in her characters makeup and clothing looks just like Zooey Deschanel. 🙂 I can take that. And now I also feel less like a pedo being strangely attracted to her. But dammit, her character is supposed to be in high school. I feel confused.

But yes, I am definitely looking forward to next week. I still feel the show won't end up going exactly what I'd like it to go, but I won't exactly be disappointed regardless. What I want eventually is if this stays for more than a season, to show the start of human bio models and the start of their revolt. IIRC, in BSG they at first abandoned Caprica and formed their own colony, yes? And then decided nah, we just wanna kill y'all.

IIRC the timeline is that the first Cylon war was 40 years before the second, which was what we saw on BSG. This show said it takes place 58 years before the second war started.
By that reasoning the first Cylon revolt happened 18 years from when Caprica is taking place. Does that make sense?

So what you're saying is... is that it's possible? 🙂

I think the type of story this show contains, 18 years isn't too much to show. This show seems to deal a lot more with politics and sci-fi as a means to an end.. wait that's like BSG. lol

But seriously, the show has to encapsulate the entire progress of Cylon research/advancement/evolution, and how the politics evolves around the technology. At least, I hope they show the span of years. R&D doesn't happen in days, peoples don't enter into civil war overnight, etc etc etc.

If they show the development over the long term of 18 years they will have to "artificially" age the actors, which never seems to work well, imo.
They would look clearly made up to look older, which is very distracting.

Though its possible the story could take place just over a few years, since the Cylons could be developed, and the path to their eventual revolt be in place, just not shown.

Side note: Syfy announced what show they're going to pair SGU with this Spring. They're going to be importing season 2 of BBC's Merlin and running that. No one knows which time slot it goes in to, but it's very likely that it's going to be placed earlier than SGU, which may mean that it'll get pushed to 10PM.

They should bring back SciFi Fridays (or at least try) with SGU, Caprica, and Doctor Who.

Quick fact: The Athena School of whatever that they show is the Vancouver School of Theology in the real world.

Didn't watch the pilot yet, but saw the first episode.

Gotta say, I like it. It's not based on a "starship" so there's no misleading about action, no 'too much drama', etc.

What a way to spend a fridy night,

Just watch out for the wallet inspector.

Did you notice the second episode took place 1 month later from the previous weeks episode. I wonder if each week they will accelerate the time line that way in order to get to important events in that universe.

I was surprised when I watched the unedited DVD of the pilot. I could tell this was not going to be your typical show. I just hope they don't get in a slump like they did with BSG for a season and a half.
