I am fairly certain it's a language thing. In the UK they often refer to a season as a series. For example, the office DVDs (even here in the US) are referred to as the first series and second series. Here we would call it season.
The intro to the first season on Sci Fi here seemed to imply that it was not a mini series. They had some intro after the first episodes to the effect of "this season on battlestar galactica" followed by 30 seconds of teasers relating to the whole season.

lots of uk series are that long.
