Tonight's automotive trivia question

This one is fairly easy.

What was the one peculiar, if not ironic, thing about the Pontiac 350 cid V8 engine made in the 60's and 70's? This does not mean the Chevy small block found in some Pontiacs. This is a Pontiac made engine.

oddly most Pontiac V8's are really the same. Serious interchangability.

The Buick small block 350 looks like a 455. Physically larger than the small block chevy, it weighs only 450 lbs.

They were all big blocks?

It's not they were all big block just that there was no deviation in motor size like the chevies. There was still a 350 small block and 455 big block but the actual size of the motor was the same. It's the bore and stroke that was different.

AMC is the same way.

Oldsmobile has some interchange ability as well. The valve covers,water pump,oil pan, accesory brackets fit both small and big.

'Small' and 'big' block nomenclature is directly from the Chevy camp. There was no 'small block' until the 396 was introduced in 1965. The block was physically larger than the 'small' block, and the displacement usually was also. The same distinction has been applied to other makes of engine, resulting in much confusion. As has been said, some other makes have the same physical size for many different displacements. The musclecar crowd usually defines a 'big block' as having 400ci or more.

The answer is the CID. Listed as 350 cid it really displaces 354 cid. Sort of like getting more than you thought you had.

The LS1 is only 346 or 347 CID.

um, ok.. Then did you also know that a 5.0 mustang was really a 4.9 Doesn't sound as cool as saying you had a 5 litre though huh?

The 396 became a 402 (.030 larger 396) in 1970, iirc. It was still advertised as a 396, though.

Also, in a light truck, the 396 was advertised as a 400. Now that's trivia

Actually they made a lot of them. The 1982 -1989 (not sure about after that, could be more) camaros had them as well as the monte carlo SS

305 chevy started in 1976.
