TomTom Nav app for iPhone 3G & 3GS arrives

I took one look at this, then the price, then I went to Best Buy to see what stand alone units were available for. I found this refurb unit going for the same $99.99.

It's worth noting that you also have to buy the hands free car kit anyway for the iPhone since in many states and provinces, using a handheld mobile phone for any purpose while driving is illegal. The car kit with software is rumoured to cost nearly $200 according to Engadget. While the iPhone's GPS feature is handy (I use it a lot for my job), I think what TomTom wants is a bit too much money to ask for what basically amounts to a spoken word book of maps.

My feelings exactly. Maps is fine for my purposes--I don't absolutely have to have turn-by-turn directions spoken to me, as I go. But, some people do.

I personally wanted access to the maps offline, since I do a lot of traveling and sometimes I don't have data. However, I can count on my hands how many times I've needed this... so I'll be passing. I am curious to see how many people buy this at $99.

how is this better than the navigon softwre?

the funny thing is that i have a fanboy coworker who is like: tom tom is out, now its time to get rid of my awful garmin. wait till he tries it and sees how TERRIBLE the battery life it, you basically have to get the cradle or a car charger if you want to use this

I'm guessing this is going to work like the windows mobile version.

If so it works pretty much like a dedicated TomTom gps unit (I've run my phone version along side a dedicated unit)

Obviously the form factor is different, but you only have one unit to carry around and that unit will have internet access (for traffic updates etc)

I would have gotten it at $50, or $100 if it included the dock.

Yea.. I would probably grab it for $100 with Dock... but without the dock, I find it's not worth the admission price.

Did anyone pick this up? If so, what are your thoughts on it's worth?

Agreed...with the dock...I might be interested and just replace my TomTom...does this get free map updates...or will we have to pay for those as well (I'm assuming you will)?
