Dang you have a good memory - that or some awesome google-fu skills ;)

Memory. I lived vicariously through Tom's for years and years until I had disposable cash of my own.

My google-fu sucks...try finding info for martial arts programs for kids in Tianmu, I may as well pound random keys on the keyboard for all that I can come up with :(

Tom was a wacky guy, lol. He always had his heart on his sleeve and often got into "trouble" for being more blunt about things than many people could handle.

As others have said, he's been gone from THG for years. I started working for them in 04 and he was already a distant memory at that point, as I recall.

Tom once got into a personal tif with our own Harvey (emeritus Forum Director and current Supreme Administrator), turned out he (Tom) had a rather nasty anti-American sentiment complete with the stereotyping of a most unflattering nature (unflattering of Tom).

You never know though, people say crap offhand in moments that they regret later but don't necessarily have the same audience and opportunity to express their regrets. So I don't know how much of that was the tip of the iceberg versus a "oh I can't believe I said that, that is so not who I really am or what I stand for" type moment.

For me it was one of those personal moments where you feel deflated and realize the statement "you should never meet your heroes because they will only disappoint you" is absolutely true.

As I was reading this thread I remembered I had saved something from way, way back in the early days when I found THG back in 97 I think. I just dug it up, and it's classic Pabst, lots of run-on sentences and ruffled feathers. Those were the good old days.

IMO the appeal of the early on-line hardware review site was the perceived genuine legitimacy of the hardware reviewer.

Back then it was all hardware bought from retail channels. No advertising, no sponsors, no clouded judgment or conflicts of interest.

Things got complicated post-2000 as folks grew up and were no longer sated with living with their parents and earning $20k a year for their hard-fought efforts. The kids became adults and wanted six-figure incomes the same as any professional.

But that required their review sites to become professional sites as well. So they either sold out like the Sharky Ross's of the world or they held on but grew up and became professionals in their craft like Anand.

There really weren't a lot of options, growing up and wanting adult stuff in your house that costs big bucks is very natural...and it drives personal decisions that have knock-on effects at the business level.

Like there was an Anand at Anandtech.

I think that's an unfair comment. Anand is definitely still at the reigns at Anandtech. If you read the content on this site you can tell Anand has oversight. The high standards are there. He has to hire more people to expand. One person can only do so much.

Plus the other writers/reviewers here are top notch. Which is the only way Anand would have it.
