As I was reading this thread I remembered I had saved something from way, way back in the early days when I found THG back in 97 I think. I just dug it up, and it's classic Pabst, lots of run-on sentences and ruffled feathers. Those were the good old days.
IMO the appeal of the early on-line hardware review site was the perceived genuine legitimacy of the hardware reviewer.
Back then it was all hardware bought from retail channels. No advertising, no sponsors, no clouded judgment or conflicts of interest.
Things got complicated post-2000 as folks grew up and were no longer sated with living with their parents and earning $20k a year for their hard-fought efforts. The kids became adults and wanted six-figure incomes the same as any professional.
But that required their review sites to become professional sites as well. So they either sold out like the Sharky Ross's of the world or they held on but grew up and became professionals in their craft like Anand.
There really weren't a lot of options, growing up and wanting adult stuff in your house that costs big bucks is very natural...and it drives personal decisions that have knock-on effects at the business level.
