I can't believe that they said the

<< .Differences in quality are hardly noticeable, >>

The second picture looks like crap to me there is a big difference i hope not all of their review are like that!

there are flaws in that article.

but it's a nice read anyway...

it does say hardly noticeable... ;-) which means it is noticeable.

frankly, i'd rather have mpeg2, since mpeg4 is so cpu demanding.

since the cable industry chose mpeg4, i don't doubt mpeg4 specific hardware acceleration is far behind =)

i will say mpeg4 is a nice alternative to mpeg2.

Yes, MPEG2 is much nicer than MPEG4 but you have to concider that it also takes up at least 5-10x more space than MPEG4... The images Tom showed in his page are compressed to a pretty high rate of compression. If you compress it a little less (say, putting a whole movie into 2 cds instead of 1) the image quality is VERY acceptable, though still not the same as MPEG2.

I noticed something...

look at the top bar where it says "Windows Media Player"....compare the two. It looks like the MPEG-4 screenshot was taken with a lower resolution.

That second Matrix picture does look like crap to me. It seems as if it's made up of a bunch of little squares. I don't think I could live with that kind of quality after seeing the movie on DVD.

Mpeg4 is to Mpeg2 as MP3 is to CD-DA. Much smaller and for all practical purposes worth it in many cases.

I just noticed something else.... look at the windows around the screenshots on the page, and compare the light/dark tones of the top window compared to the bottom one.... the top one's a bit lighter than the bottom one.
