Tom's Hardware and those irritating videos.

Don't get me wrong, I love AnandTech but I also visit and like other sites as well. One site that I used to like Tom's Hardware site, but now hate it because of the video adverts.

Basically every time you visit the site or browse to a different page an advert video automatically starts, which is infinitley irritating. Every time you go on the site you have quickly find the video before it starts then manually mute it before you can continue to read the rest of page in peace. The really irritating thing is that you can't concentrate on reading the page whilst the fecking vidoe audio is blairing on.

I have no problems with site creating adverts for revenue but it is taking the piss when the first thing you have to do when you open the page is first of all hunt down the video and quickly mute it and have do that for every page you browse on Tom's Hardware. 🙁

Yeah, I leave ads enabled to help out websites that I like (like Anandtech). But it's super annoying when they auto-play videos, especially with sound.

I was on Lifehacker the other day and it put a 30-second non-skippable video over the article. They must really be hurting 🙁

Man. I stopped reading TH in like 2002 or so. Every time I found myself linked there for something the site was just became a giant confusing mess.

I stopped reading TH about 2000 or so. It got to the point i could tell what review was going to do well by the banner at the top of teh screen. NO matter that 200 other sites say product X was the best. he would say product Y was better (and oddly they had banners all over).

not to mention some of the other shit that went on with tom himself.

Yeah ESPN is like that too. Sometimes I come home late from work and forget that I had the sound on. Then the stupid video auto plays and scares the crap out of me and sometimes wakes someone up. Now I always double check the sound is muted before I do anything

Yeah and now Youtube is doing non-skippable ads too...I wanted to watch a 2-minute tech video and had to sit through a 30-second commercial. Seems excessive.

The best is when I go on Youtube to watch trailers for movies, and they have an advertising trailer for a different movie as the ad for the video 😀

Maybe you should try watching a different trailer then it might show you the trailer advert for the one that you originally wanted. 😀

Tomshardware went to shit years ago. I'm sure you can find other alternatives that aren't so cumbersome. Their interface has been terrible for 10 or more years.

LOL, I thought OP was talking about this Tom's Hardware video. Man the nerd rage was high as hell when this video released.

Tom's has always been an Intel whore.

I only used to go there for their charts, which I must admit are well put together. I found their community to be really obnoxious though. Got called a fraud once when I called them out on their BS. Good times. 😎

Wasn't Tom's headquarters within a mile of Intel's corporate offices? I think they gave him so much free stuff it was inevitable that he'd be their spokesperson.

Back when the Athlon was kicking the Pentium 3's butt, Tom would always find some obscure test to prove the Pentium was better.

Tom had a lot of influence back then. If he had ever come out and said the truth, that the Athlon was clearly a better cpu than the P3 or P4 then AMD might be a real competitior to Intel today.

So none of you were lured by Tom's reviews with boobs? ATOT is slacking nowadays...

Tom hasn't written anything for the site in over a decade.

The site definitely sells its review opinions. It used to be good in 2000 but it took a dive in 2001 or so and never came back.

And I use an add blocker unless I really like the site (yes, ananadtech is one of them) or they have very annoying ads.

And on another note, IE has a pretty good ad blocker now.

I used Tom's VGA/CPU Charts extensively back in the day until Anand finally came up with their own. I still like how Tom compiles everything into a big chart, but anand's drop down menu makes it quicker and easier to find the exact chip you're looking to compare.

Just visited Tom's Hardware for the first time in a while. I don't know it if it is just me, but he videos don't play audio automatically when you visit the site now, which is lovely. 🙂

Dr. Tom Pabst sold Tom's Hardware in 2007 for 20M, but it still carries his name. That's irritating in itself. Then Tom seemingly disappeared off the face of the earth. The End.
