Tomb Raider 2016 AMD Fury "fix"

as explained: The game is very weird in the sense that in scenes your fps can be say 30 on average and then when you pan to the right all of the sudden is jumps up to 65 fps. This happens throughout the game and makes it a challenge to properly test the graphics cards.

winnar!!

Pre-release review.

Compare that to Steam release build, which had a pre-release patch:

this game is really odd and I see people praising it as a great quality port,
but it's one of the only games where a 750 Ti is to slow to match performance/visuals from the Xbox One version (the other is maybe the crappy port of the batman game?)

the game seems more demanding than it should, but I wonder how many tests were made without the patch, probably it will be a good idea to wait for a few more patches and driver updates.

I'm not gonna change bios settings just for one game, but the game definitely needs some optimization. The FPS fluctuates wildly. I'm running at a mix of Very High and High and sometimes I barely make my 40fps minimum Freesync range and other times I'm well north of 60. And I'm not talking random minimums but averages. Fun game, and the graphic technology is visually extremely impressive but it's not quite optimized yet.

With games that have Gameworks, you need to wait for an AMD patch for it to work well. No point playing the game without it usually.

That is AMD´s fault. I would test that on radeons and other games.
Edit: or the game simply detects more cores and begin to using command lists or something that kills amd performance.

This is not comparable to the "crappy port of the batman game". That game is broken beyond repair. WB actually offered everyone their money back (on more than one occasion). It was the only way to save any cred at all after the abortion that Batman AK was. Tomb Raider just isn't running as good as we are used to.

Has anyone tried turning down the tessellation through Crimson to see how much of a difference that makes?

I always cap tessellation at 8x. I still get the wild average FPS variation based upon different areas. Now the CPU core thing may be an AMD exclusive problem (I never tested it to confirm its still in the day 1 patch version), but certain areas having much lower average FPS is common across AMD and Nvidia as I have read many 970 users complaining about the low FPS in the Installation and Valley.

That's good to know. So, it's not likely tessellation LOD that is causing the fluctuations. Does it increase overall performance much?

We are also getting the first generation of xbox/ps4 specifically coded game engines. The extra functionality particularly around memory management might be starting to bite and ports will get more complex.

Ha,first AAA game of 2016 is a single threaded one...no wonder they where trying to make it Dx12.

If it has more than one thread then the context switches needed to keep them synchronized are taking up more cpu power then is gained by running the extra threads...

My magic 8ball says this will be resolved within a week.

Clearly a game bug or unforseen driver issue is coming into play.

But blaming THIS on gameworks?

That just insane.

It's already fixed. All the sites that test the pre-release build have it wrong.

On release day, there was a major patch. Result totally different.

There seems to a memory leak though which is crashes on my end; but I need to double check.

Does need more work and a driver from AMD

That's impossible. We were led to believe consoles having off the shelf PC parts were going to stop the bad ports meme!

The problems start when you got publishers making deals. Game was borked from the start using Xbone as the lead platform. They probably had to do some magic memory management that didn't translate to well to a standard memory system found in the PS4/PC.

They just said that it would be easier and easier it is,they just recpompile the game to use Dx11 and that's it you got a PC version(that runs like arkham knight) ,most are still extremely bad for PCs because running at (sub)30FPS is so deeply hard-coded into them.

It's not really going to get better until DX12/Vulkan are the primary APIs being used. I still don't have much confidence in a lot of dev houses though. A) you need to know what you are doing. Nextgen APIs don't change that. B) Even if you know what you are doing you need to care enough to get it right before launching. The economics won't change with the API being used.

I don't even think DX12/Vulkan is going to help. Most of these devs have their hands tied by publishers bean counting. Too many games with huge interest in the states get fubbar'd by publishers nickle and diming the port teams.

And this is just porting from one Language to another, once you change platforms good luck! Games should start on PC and get ported to consoles where the subpar performance is easier to hide. Again, why was Tomb Raider 2015 designed with the Xbone as lead console? Because of a publishing deal. That platform doesn't even have the buying/selling power of it's predecessor.

Give it a rest.
Is this game a GW release or not? It is a trend, and it would be simply not wise to ignore the common bit. For a GW release, it is not too shabby, there has been much worse (and by some margin). I'm still thinking several times, when a bunch of Ubisoft games can be had for pennies right now on humble bundle, as i don't want to reward dodgy business practices. Thankfully i can give 100% to charities, so there's that easing my conscience. 😛

By the way, why would you genuinely not criticise what is but overall a bad thing for gamers, regardless of your loyalties to whatever brand? My first couple of cards were Nvidia, if you must know.
