From his AMD Athlon 1333 Review:

"Depending on your stance towards AMD and Intel, you could call Athlon just 'simply straight forward', 'unglamorous' or 'less advanced', compared to Pentium 4. One fact remains, Athlon doesn't try to be something that it's not. It's a 'working-class' processor, rough, honest, reliable and hard working, but also always hungry."

Now, there's no doubt AMD deserves praise for being the industry leader these past 18 months. But, come on. Working-class? Tough, honest, reliable? That's laying it on a little thick. Let the benchmarks speak for themselves, Tom. ;)

OH there goes Tom with his stupid comments again. What else is new. I dont even understand why anybody reads his hardware reviews anymore unless they are looking for a good laugh.

He is catering to the general sentiment regarding AMD. Most people still do not recognize the K7 as an upper tier processor. I guess he is trying for popularity and not factuality. Probably gets more ad banner clicks that way.

I gotta say this: I LOVE TOM! I really enjoy reading his reviews. Sure, they are a bit contreversial but that makes them enjoyable to read. And hey, the guy is right a lot of the time. He knows what he is talking about and has the balls to admit it. Now, some would say that is egotistical, but I wouldn't.

I like Tom because he speaks his opinion, he doesnt give straight forward bland reviews. And he for sure is #1 with benchmarks, hes extensive in benchmarking. If I want to compare performance, Toms is the first place I go.

Oh, this is no knock against Tom as a respectable reviewer. I'm as big a fan of AMD as anyone else right now, but even I think Tom sounds a little silly using adjectives like "hard working" and "always hungry" to describe a piece of silicon.

Exactly. Tom is pretty arrogant, but he does two things that I like. First, more often than not he calls it like it is, and doesn't mince words like many reviewers do. Secondly, he definitely lets his personality show through, sometimes his reviews are as humorous as they are informative. :)

Of course, sometimes it's just annoying.

I dont see the problem. Maybe he using too much 'descriptive' words but it is damn true.

Working class cpu - well it is cheap and it gives good performance, how is that not 'working class'?

Tough - well i dont agree with this as they break too easily physically, but speedwise they are tough.

Honest - haha well they give the correct answer in maths so I suppose they are 'honest' but this is a bit ...

Reliable - well it is as reliable as intel's product. :)

I was a fan of AMD since I started in on PC's and had to upgrade cpu's... I could get 5 k6-2's for the price of an Pentium at the same clock... even if the Pentium had 100MHz better performance, a faster k6-2 was still a lot cheaper.

In response to the comment of why anybody even reads Tom's reviews anymore. Here are two reasons for using at least TWO different sources for info.

Anand's review of the Thunderbird when it was released stated correctly that it had a 64 bit path to the l2 cache. Tom incorrectly stated it as having a 256 bit bus to the level 2 cache, he later corrected it.

Anand's review of the ATI mobility Radeon incorrectly stated it as having two pipelines, he later corrected it. Tom correctly stated that it has one pipeline.

Mistakes happen and it doesn't hurt us to hear from a second source

Tom is a good source of info. if you can tolerate the ego. Sometimes it is just too much for me.

Remember that English is Tom's second language, and he doesn't always handle it quite the same way a native English speaker does. This really shows when he is trying to emphasize a point. Mix that up with a generous portion of ego and put it through the blender, and what comes out needs to be eaten with salt.
