I guess SNL still has it's moments (some of the more recent Gore/Bush skits gets a chuckle out of me), but it hasn't really been that good for at least 15 years. More often than not, the skits are just stupid; what was tonight's eagle skit and dog show skit about anyhow? Not only were they not funny, they were almost painful to watch.
SNL skits have always tended towards the eclectic and artsy, if not the highbrow side of things. While the original cast could pull that off, subsequent casts have had mixed results trying to replicate it. I think the main reason SNL has it's ups and downs is because they cycle the cast every few years. Sometimes they get talented people, and sometimes not. IMO, the last good SNL cast was from the Phil Hartman, Dana Carvey, Chris Farley era.
BTW: I thought the animated short film, Sex and the Country, was hysterical! But as Uncle Larry says, "It's a sick world, and I'm a happy guy."
