I saw a Tokina 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 AF-II today on Craigslist for $300. It is advertised as being in mint condition and comes with the case and hood.

I haven't been able to find any comprehensive reviews on this lens online. I know that this is the older version (the newer one is the AF-D), but I'm not sure what the differences are between the two. I also haven't been able to find any image quality tests on the lens...I've just read on a few forums that it was comparable to the Canon 70-300mm DO IS, which is a $1000+ lens.

Is the Tokina worth it for my 40D at $300? I'm thinking about using it for astrophotography and wildlife shots, not really sports (so I'm ok with the slow aperture and slow AF).

Fred Miranda has a page for what looks to be your version. Photozone.de didn't have it listed. I think the FM page should be helpful, there's 20 review spanning a few years.
