Every few months I'll wake up and one of my toes either the right or left one feels like it was sprained almost. It hurts to walk on it, and has a continuous throbbing pain associated with it. Searching google came up with nothing. It seems to go away in 3-4 days time. I have no idea what causes it though. Anyone have any ideas? Or any other information that is needed?

Arthritis maybe? My ankles feel like that if I've played basketball or soccer the night before, but it goes away in minutes, not days.

If it's tender, inflamed, and red, it definitely could be gout. Especially with the duration and frequency you've described.

Here's the bad news - to test for sure, they have to insert a needle into the joint and extract fluid. You will want to punch the nurse when he/she does this. I suffered with it for years and they kept saying it was dietary, but I really didn't eat any of the 'bad' foods on the list. Plus my uric acid levels were generally normal when I would have a flareup. I finally put two and two together and realized it was stress-induced, not dietary. Also, they finally put me on colchecine. That has had an amazing effect. I still get flareups from time to time but the medicine keeps it from getting worse so the pain is tolerable.

Next time you get a flareup, get to the doctor immediately so they can draw fluid. It's painful as hell but at least they can start you on the right medication if it is indeed gout.

Had the same problem. MD said, infection or gout or R-Arthritis. It was both toes. I do not belive stuff happens in twos at the same time on a body. Logic prevailed: If you sleep on your back the covers rub toe tips raw. Tape the tips. fixed.

First thing I thought of. Could also be regular arthritis (but that's less likely to be really red, warm, and visibly swollen), a distal plantar fasciitis, flexor hallucis strain, etc. Would definitely think about seeing a doctor about it because it COULD be gout.
