ANTIGO, Wis. - Three-year-old Robert Moore went fishing for a stuffed replica of Sponge Bob and ended up trapped in a vending machine. The toddler's adventure began with a Saturday evening shopping trip with his grandmother, Fredricka Bierdemann, and three siblings.

Bierdemann ended the trip by giving each child a dollar and telling them to have fun in a retailer's game room.

A stuffed Sponge Bob in a vending machine's bin caught Robert's eye. He tried without success to fish it out with a plastic crane.

"I told him I could get it for him," his grandmother said. "He's a character. He said, 'Oh no, I can get it.'"

When she turned her back to get another dollar for a second try, Robert took off his coat and squeezed through an opening in the machine. He landed in the stuffed animal cube.

"I turned around and looked for him, and he said, 'Oma, I'm in here," Bierdemann said. "I thought I would have a heart attack."

Store employees couldn't find a key to the machine, so Robert waited while the Antigo Fire Department was called.

"He was having a ball in there, hugging all the stuffed animals," Bierdemann said. "He was so good-natured, but I was shaking like a leaf."

Firefighters broke one lock but then spotted two latches inside the plastic cube. They passed a screwdriver to Robert.

"He stacked up all the stuffed animals and used that screwdriver to open the latch," his grandmother said. "You should have seen him go."

Eventually, Robert freed himself. But his mother, Marie Moore, and grandmother said they were lucky that he remained calm when another child might not have. He went home safe ? but without a stuffed Sponge Bob.

I find the picture associated w/ the article to be rather amusing :)

That child should be arrested and punished to the full extent of the law.

Just kidding!

Seems like the source is a legitimate paper.

I just find the situation where someone had to take a pic of it funny. The kid just sits there staring @ the camera.

This one is legit after all..it has just happened before, surprisingly in Wisconsin again.

I bet it has happened elsewhere too....though I still can't figure out how kids get inside. When I was a kid, I couldn't get my arm up anywhere near the toys.

He went home safe ? but without a stuffed Sponge Bob.

WTF? They didn't let him have the spongebob toy? You'd think the manager would be cool and give it to him.

And I wonder if Nickeloden heard about this and sent him a poop load of Spongebob crap so the grandmother wouldnt sue them for making a character so adicting it made him do that.

I'm no grinch, but why actively reward the kid who breaks into a vending machine?? It's bad enough that they were all so proud of how "brave" he was during the rescue.

Parents really need to reign in their kids more, particularly in public.

It looks like these machines are holding bigger animals than the ones i'm used to seeing. The stuffed animals are about the size of a small child.

I'm not entirely convinced this isn't the same child whose parents are using false names and ages for him, as he goes around sneaking into the machines, and then settling lawsuits with wal-mart out of court.

Dude are you a parent? I am and you can be the best parent in the world but that one time you have to do something and take your eye off a small child for one second they are shoving something up thier nose or climing into vending machines. What was grammy suposed to do, have a fixed eye every second and have her money always in hand for thoes all important times they go play the crane game? Its a child and a child will do stuff really if your watching or not or the best parent in the world with a certificate to prove it. Kids will be kids.

Now I do agree with you on not rewarding the child for his actions as welll but so you know my comment I made above wasnt to reward the child just in this sue happy world you would think some lawyer is knocking on grannys door and the cheap way out is to give the child the stupid toy and PRAY he learned his lesson. You know you can sue the maker of tha machine for puposly making a machine opening big enough a small child can climb in. I mean hell what were they thinking when that made that thing. Or why did they have to make a character so loveable that would make the child climb into a machine, that was puposly build so a small child can go into but not come out of the same way he went in, I mean what was the company thing of when they came up with that?

So you see its not all the fault of the parent and they should sue them big time :p

I went to the family fun center in Wilsonville, OR and I played on a machine that spit out prizes the size of small children. The claw was at least 2 1/2 ft wide

Just kidding!

No court's going to convict a child. Except maybe Texas.

Have to agree. I'm glad he's ok and all, but I have to wonder how long it took him to get in there. How long was his parent paying zero attention to him? What if a pedophile with an abduction in mind came along, or he wandered out of the place and into a busy road? Parents expect society to bend over backwards and raise their precious children for them, but it's a risky favor to ask.
