Nope, I'm the best first baseman ever. Sure, I didn't play past Legion ball, but I was pretty damn solid defensively.

He's only been in the league 7 years. It is a little premature to call him the best ever.

No he's not. He plays at Coors Field, he's a very good player, but I have no doubt his stats would be nothing like they are now if he played say in Seattle at the big Safeco field.

look where he plays? his stats are significantly higher at home, but I would say he is still the best 1B playing right now regardless of home field.

He hit more homeruns on the road then at home.

Also, his defensive skills are better then Rafael Palmeiro or Paul Konerko.

DING! DING! DING! We have a winner. Heltons numbers are a joke. He's playing in the best hitters park in the history of baseball in the juiced ball/expansion pitching era. Comparing Helton's numbers to Gehrigs is like comparing Little League stats to the bigs. These days even 2nd basemen can hit 50 home runs.

Bingo. You can't take the numbers of someone playing in Coors Canaveral seriously. That place is nothing more than a launching pad with bleachers. Not to mention the juiced ball and watered down pitching. Gehrig for sure.

I'm waiting for RabidMongoose to bust out the OPS+ garbage stat of Gehrig vs Helton... :)

I hosted Todd Helton for a campus visit at OSU - he told me he was going to be a first round pick in baseball, and I was like "ok buddy", he wasn't very big or overly athletic looking...boy did I blow it there!

He already knew he was going to Tennessee and was going to play QB and also play baseball there.

His numbers outside of Coors are impressive as well, but I'm going to guess with his back problems his numbers may start to go down...I believe he has put on 30lbs this year....

In 2003 Helton had almost exactly the same number of at bats home and away, about 300 to 290 or so.
Runs 83H/52A
HomeRuns 23H/10A
Hits 117H/92A
RBI 72H/45R
AVG .391H/.324A
Slugging .739H/.514A

Eliminate the Coors Field stats and extrapolate the more accurate road stats out to 162 games and you have a guy hitting .324 with 20HR and 90RBI and 184 hits slugging .514. Pretty good numbers to be sure, but there's a HUGE drop-off between what he does at Coors and the more realistic road stats.

In the dead ball era, 1927 Lou Gehrig hit .373 with 47HR, 175RBI 218 hits slugging .765

'Nough said. Heltons stats are a joke. Take out the Coors Field element and he's not even close to being the best first baseman of THIS time let alone of all time. He's not worthy to carry Gehrig's jockstrap.

He's one of the better hitters in the game but he doesn't compare to a Lou Gehrig or a Jimmie Foxx.
