While the guy was at work, she certainly could have broken a window and gotten out. Were there bars on them all or something? Still....I'm sure there was a way out.

Again, if the prisoner believed themselves worthless and that it was hopeless to seek help (ie social ridicule, they'd be put in prison, couldn't survive without the kidnapper), why wouldn't they be as docile as a housebroken puppy? Escaping doesn't happen without a determination to leave, a willingness to accept the risk of failure, and a certain measure of creativity/initiative.

Lack of self-esteem and feelings of dependency almost certainly can beat someone down. I suppose you're going to tell me no rape victims go back and date their rapists, or that battered girlfriends/housewives don't run back to their significant others? Just because it doesn't sound plausible to you and hasn't happened to anyone you know of doesn't make it bull

Again, I don't feel sorry for someone who lets their self worth be decided by someone else.

I have to say I kind of agree with you. I still feel sorry for her (assuming everything happened as she describes), but it's hard to be very sympathetic. I'd chalk this one up to "most people are idiots and/or sheep" syndrome.

I never understood cases like this. Why live that way? I would do something about it day one. I don't care if the person says "if you tell someone I kill you". Risk of something bad happening vs something bad happening anyway. I'll take the risk.

Then again, I've always been the type of person that don't let anyone get away with doing stuff against me. I learned that from when I was in grade school and had this bully on me all the time. Not the type that beats you up every day after school but he would just tease me all the time and such. Finally I told myself "why am I taking this?" and chose between beating him up in pure rage one day when he least expects it or just telling the principal. I ended up doing the "right" thing and told the principal. The rest of the school year was pure hell for him. Though I still think I should of kicked his ass. :p

But 50 years... wtf. Why take that sitting down?
