I gathered he got 15 years, but is eligible for probation at five years - that does not mean he will get out after five years, though.

15 years is actually pretty strict. Remember he is a first time offender. You can't convict him for a different crime.

There are consecutive sentences. After paroled for the 15 year sentence there are two more sentences to be served. Minimum will be seven because he has to serve at least 5 on the first charge, then work off the additional sentences.
